Sex education call by leaders

Jun 17 2003

By Sophie Blakemore, Birmingham Post

Religious leaders have called for communities in Birmingham to abandon taboos and support the provision of sex education in the city's schools.

The city's Council of Sikh Gudwaras said the health and well-being of young people was more important in today's society than out-dated beliefs.

Sewa Singh Mandla, chairman of the council, said it was time to make sure youngsters were properly educated about safe sex but it was also important to consult religious leaders about these sensitive matters.

"At one time sex education was not freely talked about but now we have to talk about it because there are problems with youngsters from lack of information," he said.

The issue was discussed at a recent meeting between religious leaders in Birmingham, who will help to promote sex education within their communities.

Organised by the Birmingham Teenage Pregnancy Strategy - a multi-agency project involving health, education and voluntary organisation representatives - the programme will seek to raise the sensitive subject of sex and relationships in religions.

Sarah Farmer, teenage pregn ancy co-ordinator for

Birmingham, said getting sex education into the open was vital to address the issue without causing offence.

"It is important that we consult people of different faiths and communities to make sure that they have a voice in how sex education is delivered," she said.

"Resources are now available to schools so that sex and relationship education can be approached in a way which is sensitive to

people with diverse perspectives.

"Part of this process is to develop a consultation process with parents, carers and members of the wider community which can reduce the fear of creating conflict or causing offence."

Dr Jagjit Singh Taunque, secretary of the Birmingham Civic Society, said understanding all of the concerns surrounding sex was an essential part of teenage education.

"A few years ago parents and community leaders were not ready to accept that sex education should be taught in schools but now 75 per cent of them accept it should," said Dr Taunque.

"I don't want to see a girl of 15 in school get pregnant through lack of knowledge and it's a necessity to teach sex education."

His wife, Satinder Kaur Taunque, chair of the Punjab Culture Centre in Birmingham, said she would be spreading the message to local mothers that teachers should be supported in providing sex education.

this is a good idea thouh

i thought they already taught that :D in school.

lol@rock veer... kids wont ask stupid quetions(even if they do teachers are taught how to handle the situation)

parents should be happy, since they can;t talk bout this to their kids, at least some educated personality is there to tell and give info.

i dont knwo bout other states but, in IL state, kids are req. to take Health education. either u take it in 1st yr(freshmen 9th grade or in 2nd yr)

it provides all the information. almst everything a person needs to know bout health(from diet, self-esteem, peer pressure.... to all the deseasez).the idea behind it is that, kids will find out somehow..even if adults dont tell them!(thur frinds etc...and sometimes the infomation that frinds tell is wrong)

i had a gal(13 yrs old) in my 8th grade who was was 4 months preg, but she didn't know till she went to teh doc.

that was shockin.

so by lookin at these kind of cases, no parent will go against this education.

we used to laugh in that classes when teacher would tell us what peopel and our frinds think or would say to presuade us to do wrong, and what is the reality.

i hate talkin bout this, but face it, we have teen pregz. whic is becoming problem now these days , jus cuz of lack of knowlegde. same for drug abuse!

bhul chuk muaff karni

one of teh philosper said "No Knowledge is better THEN WRONG knowledge"

and "half truth is a whole lie"

but teens will get the wrong knowledge or half the

truth...

so its better to proived them with right knowledge, so tehy can make better choisez for themselves init rolleyes.gif

waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh
