Re: 4th Feb AGM of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall.

In his opening welcome to the general body, convened at 4.15pm at Park Avenue Gurdwara on Sunday 4th Feb 07, the president, Mr Himat Singh Sohi, thanked some members of the Sabha for their reconciliatory initiatives and announced that a Moving Forward Understanding had been reached between the executive and the Lion opposition group. He expressed his sincere wish to execute the measures put forward to resolve the conflict and discord that has seriously disrupted the progress of the Singh Sabha in Southall in the past few years. He undertook to reinstate the 8 expelled members of the Sabha.

The general secretary, Dr PS Garcha, announced that there are constitutional problems that give rise to confrontation at election times and it has been agreed to formulate an independent 5 member committee to look at the issues surrounding membership recruitment and election process to introduce fairness and independency to the procedures and other problem areas. He praised the work of the reconcilers and that to win the confidence of all parties his committee would, as soon as possible, take the following initiatives:

1. Reinstate the 8 expelled members

2. Agree a memorandum of understanding to deal with all matters impacting negatively on the interests of the Sangat of Sri Guru Singh Sabha.

3. Form a working group, comprising of equal representation from both main groups and an independent person to draw up proposals intended for smooth and fair administration of the Sabha, such as:

  • Introduce fairness, independency and transparency to the membership recruitment, election processes and the process of scrutiny of eligibility of the election candidates.
  • Enhance the procedures in general to increase transparency and accountability of administration so that similar conflict does not arise.
  • To address the complaints and grievances of members and deal with membership termination in accordance with a fair and open system so that everyone’s rights are properly protected.

4. To complete the above process by the August 2007 AGM so that the final approval of the General Body can be then obtained and measures implemented immediately after the meeting.

Then Mr Bahadur Singh Kaila read out the accounts information followed by an address to general body from speakers from the Lion group.

Harjit Singh Sarpanch requested that the 8 members should be reinstated forthwith as a measure of goodwill and that the General Body was the supreme body of the Sabha. He also said the understanding initiatives were good but he stressed the need to make the system fair as unfairness was the cause of discord in the Sabha.

Sohan Singh Samra praised the reconciliation measures and thanked the committee and lion group members, GS Malhi, GS Thind, BS Dhillon, Jatinder Singh, for taking such a bold step for the better interests of the Sabha. He expressed a desire to help execute these measures immediately with utmost sincerity.

Surinder Singh Purewal spoke on the accounts and raised several points where improvements could be made similar to taking up his proposals of tax rebates in the past.

Some 600 members who showed utmost respect to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji attended this well-disciplined AGM and it was a pleasant change from previous tensions. It is hoped that with Waheguru Ji’s blessings that similar calm and brotherhood would produce good results for the Sikh Sangat of Southall.
