ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

salok mehlaa 5.

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਭੂਮਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੀ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਿਸੂਲਾ ਬਾਗੁ ॥

fareedaa bhoom rangaavalee manjh visoolaa baag.

Fareed, this world is beautiful, but there is a thorny garden within it.

ਜੋ ਨਰ ਪੀਰਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਅੰਚ ਨ ਲਾਗ ॥੧॥

jo nar peer nivaaji-aa tinHaa anch na laag. ||1||

Those who are blessed by their spiritual teacher are not even scratched. ||1||

ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਉਮਰ ਸੁਹਾਵੜੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਵੰਨੜੀ ਦੇਹ ॥

fareedaa umar suhaavarhee sang suvannrhee dayh.

Fareed, blessed is the life, with such a beautiful body.

ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕੇਈ ਪਾਈਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹ ॥੨॥

virlay kay-ee paa-ee-aniH jinHaa pi-aaray nayh. ||2||

How rare are those who are found to love their Beloved Lord. ||2||

Gurbani is so beautiful, its the purest form of poetry, and poetry expresses one's emotions/thoughts on a different level. It conveys a deep message. Bhagtaa kee baani is full of bairaag. In this salok in particular, Fareed jee is saying this world is beautiful, life is beautiful, he describes the world like a garden, rangaavali its colorful, khireaa hareaa baag. BUT, there's always a but just because its beautiful, colorful, doesn't mean your life should revolve around worldly affairs, because all that is only temporary, it is not meant to last. Bani shows us that become an udaasi, cut away your bonds, from worldly affairs, this world has a thorny garden because of maya, and when you go through that thorny garden you will feel pain and that is the dukh bhagat jee is referring to when he says manjh visoolaa baagh. With whatever we may prioritize in our life with, whether its family, spouse, friends, work, wealth, etc. its all part of the beauty of this world, but like guru sahib says dhan joban ar phulraa nathiare din chaar|| It will only last for a few days, concentrate on what you are here for.

He goes onto say whoever realizes this are not even scratched by the thorny garden they are blessed by their spiritual teacher; they are given this understanding by the true guru, whenever they come across these situations they understand and realize. Blessed is their life. May guru sahib bless us all with such an understanding. Bhul chuk muaf jee.
