SLIDESHOW: Annual Sikh procession in Bedford

Thousands join celebrations to mark birthday of Guru Nanak.

A splash of colour and a celebration of spirituality passed through Bedford on Saturday.

The town's Sikh community took part in its annual procession to mark the birthday of Guru Nanak, who founded the religion and was the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

Over 5,000 people joined the event, which spread across the town.

Charan Sekhon, assistant secretary of the GGS Gurdwara and Community Centre management and joint procession committees, said: "It was a great success and very well attended. Many people came to join us from all over the area.

"We had support from all over the community, with local people turning out to see us and others providing free food and refreshments. And the young people were very proactive too.

"There were also special services at the temples, with 48-hour services of readings of Guru Granth Sahib" (the holy book).
