Euro Parliamentary Motion calls for Truth & Justice on 1984 genocide

Jean Lambert MEP (London) has initiated a major parliamentary motion on the subject of the events of 1984 in Panjaab and India, wherein tens of thousands of Sikh civilians were killed by Indian security forces and Indian mob violence.

The 1984 GENOCIDE COALITION has welcomed the motion, as an apt marking of the 20th anniversary of this much concealed genocide. The Coalition has committed itself alongwith with many other Sikh organisations, to informing and engaging world opinion in regards to the atrocities of 1984 and the continuing wave of Indian government repression and genocide that has devastated Panjaab over the last 20 years.

The Euro Motion comes alongside three House of Commons Motions on 1984, which have been signed by a total of 90 plus MPs to date.

Both Green MEPs - Jean Lambert & Caroline Lucas - have committed their full support to the 1984 Genocide campaign.

European Parliament Motion:

"The European Parliament notes with immense concern and alarm the carnage of 1984, in Panjaab and India, involving the deaths of tens of thousands of Sikh civilians. This Parliament notes the considerable number of reports from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, documenting widespread abuse of human rights of Sikh activists and Sikh civilians by the Indian authorities. This Parliament notes the report "1984 Sikhs' Kristallnacht", which documents information from a wide-range of sources abo

ut the events of 1984 (in Panjaab and India). This Parliament calls upon the European Union to study this report, and other human rights material from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. This Parliament supports the call for a Commission of Truth & Justice under the auspices of the UN to comprehensively investigate whether the slaughter to which Indian Sikhs were subjected to in 1984 constitutes genocide as defined in the Genocide Convention and the relevant international law."
