Resist the 5 Chors

Submit yourselves to Waheguru. Resist the 5 Chors, and they will flee from you.

After we've humbled ourselves and submitted to Waheguru, we're then told to defy the 5 Chors. We don't passively resign ourselves to his attacks. We're to fight back.

These 5 thieves are: Kam (Lust), Krodh (Rage), Lobh (Greed), Moh (Attachment) and Ahankar (Ego)

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji often tells one to live a life as a spiritual battle against the evil forces.

How can we resist the 5 Chors?

The first step is to accept Waheguru's bhana (will). You won't be able to say no to the 5 Chors unless you've said yes to The Gurus. Without The Gurus we're defenseless against the 5 Chors, but with "the helmet of salvation" our minds are protected by Waheguru. Remember this: If you are a believer, The 5 Chors cannot force you to do anything. He can only suggest.

Second, you must use the Word of Waheguru as your weapon against The 5 Chors. Sikh Gurus modeled this when they were tempted in the wilderness. Every time The 5 Chors suggested a temptation, they countered by quoting Scripture.

They didn't argue with The 5 Chors. They didn't say, "I'm not hungry," when tempted to use his power to meet a personal need. They simply quoted GurBani. We must do the same. There is power in Waheguru's Word, and The 5 Chors fears it.

Don't ever try to argue with the 5 Chors. They are better at arguing than you are, having had thousands of years to practice. You can't bluff The 5 Chors with logic or your opinion, but you can use the weapon that makes him tremble – the truth of Waheguru.

This is why memorizing and reciting GurBani is absolutely essential to defeating temptation. You have quick access to it whenever you're tempted. Like all the Sikh Gurus, you have the truth stored in your heart, ready to be remembered.

If you don't have any GurBani Shabads memorized, you've got no bullets in your gun! I challenge you to memorize one Shabad a week for the rest of your life. Imagine how much stronger you'll be.
