**Press Release from the CSGB**

The Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Birmingham (supported by Birmingham City Council) is once again organising Vaisakhi celebrations in Handsworth Park. This event is free to all members of the community and will include Sikh cultural activities, a childrens inflatable, arts and crafts exhibitions, sports and entertainment on a small stage. Also there will be a Langar (marquee in which free food is served) which is an important part of the Sikh faith with food being prepared by the various Gurdwaras (Temples) from across the city. There will be an area for worship (Darbar) which will be an important focal point for the religious element of the event.

As well as the celebrations in Handsworth Park there will be two processions, one starting from the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, and the other starting from the Ramgarhia Sikh Temple (Gurdwara), Graham Street, Hockley traveling Vyse Street, Hockley Flyover, Soho Hill, Soho Road, Grove Lane and meeting in Handsworth Park. At the head of the each procession is the Guru Granth Sahib led by five Sikhs dressed in ceremonial dress to represent the five original Panj Pyare ( The Beloved Ones) who founded the order of the Khalsa as we know it today.

The event will run from 11.00am – 6.00pm. The processions are due to arrive in the park at 12.00pm (Hockley) and 1.00pm (Smethwick). Access to the park for pass holders will be via Grove Lane gate. Car Parking will be provided at Handsworth Leisure Centre for Disabled Badge Holders.

Dr Pyara Singh Bhogal Chairman of the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras Birmingham said "If you want to see diversity at work come to the Vaisakhi Celebration, the largest Asian cultural event in Europe. All the diverse communities in Birmingham join in to celebrate the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi thus promoting social cohesion, awareness and respect."

There will be road closures along the procession routes and roads will be closed approximately 1 hour before the start of the procession and will re-open once the procession has safely passed through and the roads are clear.

There is emphasis being placed on promoting 1 million chaupai sahib jaap and project 25 during the celebrations.

Furthermore there are NO bhangra shows there, which has been the case for the last couple of years. 'Live entertainment' is mainly referring to the dharmak stage and gatka demos.

Last but not least, sewadaars are needed for darbar sahib, please contact kiratraj singh(number is on the poster shown below, or alternatively email sikhthetruth@hotmail.co.uk

Project 25 will be promoted at the Vaisakhi celebrations. Rememberance ribbons will be available: project25.org.uk

Sevadars from project 25 will be on stage from 2pm-2.45pm and 4pm-4.45pm. The Chaupai Sahib Jaap and most importantly the Maha beadbi at Sikh Sangat Gurdwara will DEFINITELY be highlighted aswell as the human rights violations by Hindustan and the need for a Homeland.
