LUDHIANA: In an incident that shocked gurdwara goers on Tuesday, a granthi (Sikh priest) was caught watching clips of a porn film on his mobile phone that was hidden under the table on which he had kept the scripture.

The granthi, who managed to run away after his transgression was noticed, had allegedly been doing this for quite some time. According to sarpanch Amrik Singh of Jhar Sahab, near Ludhiana, the incident came to light in the morning when a faithful praying at the Jhar Sahab gurdwara, managed by SGPC, found granthi Gurpreet Singh ‘‘wasn’t concentrating in the prayers and was rather distracted by something else underneath the table on which the scriptures were placed’’.

‘‘I was shocked to see that the granthi was actually busy seeing pornographic clips on his cellphone that he had cleverly hidden under the table,’’ said Jasbir Singh Gill, one of those praying at the gurdwara. ‘‘I immediately called the head granthi, Jaspal Singh, and we caught the man red-handed.’’

‘‘We have registered an FIR under IPC section 295 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) against the accused after checking the porn movie clips in his mobile,’’ said Rajesh Kumar, SHO, under whose jurisdiction Jhar Sahab falls. This is the second time in recent days something like this involving a granthi has happened.

MODS although this is extremely vexacious, PLEASE leave this topic in this section, as it REMINDS us all to NOT blindly trust all Granthis and to keep an EYE on them, as not all are good characters.

Now that I have calmed down about this. I feel a little sorry for him.

How come someone who is that close the guru on a daily basis not been blessed with enough self control to stop his perverted acts??

How come his beleif is still so weak?

There was a Granthi from Bradford UK who got caught molesting a underage child and came running to midlands because the committee let him escape. Can't believe the police weren't informed we only got to know because someone from bradford had phoned my uncle and told us. i don't understand why we let any tom <banned word filter activated> and harry to granthi di seva. its disgusting.

Is this the same case where the family whose son was molested by the granthi, were intimidated by the committee/granthi supporters?

Becasue the gurdwara committe were afraid that that it would ruin the gurdwaras reputation?

Incidents like this reinforce the desperate need for us to restore Sathguroo Jee's LaReedaar Saroop to the throne. Nowadays, anyone who can read the daily newspaper in Punjabi can essentially become a Granthi. With no knowledge of GurbaaNee, Sikh Philopsophy/Principles or anything; these people take care of our Gurduaaray which is the cause for an increase in disgusting events, such as, these. If the Sangat ensured that prakaash of only LaReedaar Saroop was done then every aspiring Granthi would HAVE to get Santhhiya, would have to do sangat with a Gursikh Usthaad, thereby ensuring that every Granthi actually has knowledge about GurbaaNee, Viyaakarn, Sikh Philosophy and actually has a passion for Sikhi. Every person who wished to become a Granthi would have to go through years of training and hardwork and only dedicated Gursikhs would meet the requirements. These lazy people who only become Granthis because they don't want to do any hard work would be removed from our Gurduaaray.

How authentic is this story? I'm sorry for being a bit sceptical about the source but how can someone in a Gurdwara do something so stupidly anti-Gurmat in public.

Unless the granthi was on a suicide mission or had a screw loose, would he really see porn in full view of the sangat whilst sitting on Maharaj's tabya? I hope this is not a mud-slinging exercise by the committee on a granthi and therefore a situation was created.

Don't forget in the 80's some scummy committees were known for planting cigerates, porno mags and booze in popular granthi quarters in order to get them kicked out of Gurdwaras.

Just something to think about when reading these articles and assuming they are 100% accurate.
