Hair And Not Nails.

We keep kesh (hair) because the Guru instructed us to do so.

Kesh are also a marker of Sikh identity that identify to the world who is a Sikh. Sikhs walk the earth announcing proudly their religion while others give no sign of their convictions. In addition, hair and nails are totally different. Having long nails inhibits use of the hand. Long hair is even a reflection of good health, it is also not an impediment to daily life. Isn't it a slap in the face of those people who shave, when a day later the hair returns? Do they not think that maybe it is how God intended!

Kesh ( hair ) are Guru Ki Mohar ( Stamp).

The kesh is the Stamp of your Guru, look around even till this day, no other religion insists on Kesh specifically to both sexes and yet every prophet had long hair – Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Mohammed, even Sri Ram Chandra Ji and Bhagwan Krishan Ji in old texts are depicted with long hair.

It is a unique, royal, elegant sign of power and divine. All most all the portraits of Imaginary GOD in the east and in the West always have hair on the head and a beard. Do you ever think why that is? It is because subconsciously throughout the world it is recognised that hair on the head and beard in man resemble something divine, kind, loving, rich and powerful.

You can do a little test your self, take two pictures of same age man dressed in western cloths with similar body language and facial expression, one having short hair and clean shaven and other having long hair and full beard, they do not need to have a turban, then ask anybody at random to point out who looks more religious. Regardless of the persons background I am sure they will pick the person with long hair and beard.

Think for yourself why in 2009 somebody will think that long hair and beard represent something religious and divine.

I give you another example from the world around you, go to any local library and go to the children’s section, pick any children’s book and look for stories of a princess, all most all the photos of a princess will be with long hair, now ask your self why that is? Subconsciously human beings know the value of long hair, it is just the incredible high level of wisdom of Guru Sahib Ji that he made these simple but fantastic things an integral part of the Khalsa.

It is that reason that Guru Gobind Singh Ji made his choice to simply give the divine, kind, loving, rich, elegant yet powerful image to his Khalsa.

In gurbani it is stated that God also has long hair.

Raag Wadahans, First Mehl:

Your eyes are so beautiful, and Your teeth are delightful.

Your nose is so graceful, and Your hair is so long.

Your body is so precious, cast in gold.

His body is cast in gold, and He wears Krishna's mala; meditate on Him, O sisters.

You shall not have to stand at Death's door, O sisters, if you listen to these teachings.

From a crane, you shall be transformed into a swan, and the filth of your mind shall be removed.|7|p566.

Interesting.........Many thanks.

Many of our Punjabi born today do not connect to kes, and sadly miss out carrying the Gurus Mohar.

It's interesting to note how far back the land of Punjab and Kes goes back. The ancient name for Punjab was BrahmaRishi Desh where the land would have been run by Rishis who would have had the Keshdhari appearance.

From a Mughal called 'Babar' to the modern day 'Barber' in his/her saloon, the attack on the Guru's Mohar is only getting greater and more people are willing to loose our greatest asset, our Kes.

Very old images of Sri Ram Chandar Ji and Bhagwan Krishan Ji show keshdhari, it is the Hindus who have changed their images and show them clean shaven in all pictures. If you think about it there is no way they would shaved off their facial kesh.

When I was growing up I used to see a very very old framed print in an elderly hindu-sharma neighbours bedsit which showed Shiva in a full Keshadari roop with long dara parkash, kesh tied up. Completely contrary to the "pretty boy" (almost feminine) images we normally see.

If anyone has any of these types of images of shiv ji or the higher hindu deities etc in full keshdhari roop I would be very interested in obtaining a copy of this in digital form.

Thanks.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
