Incidents from Baba ji's Life

The Instructions Regarding Installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Baba Ji always considered Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a form of Ten Gurus and accordingly service and respect was given to him and the sangat which came in the contact was specially instructed for that. Whenever Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was to be installed, a beautiful bed spread was to cover the ground. And over it, a canopy (Chandoa) was to be fixed. Under the canopy, a takhat-posh (An elevated wooden bed type platform) had to be placed. The takhat-posh was cleaned and dried properly and then fine bed sheets with a matress were spread over it. Over the bed sheet, a small cot (Manji Sahib) was placed and covered by a small soft matress. A beautiful large handkerchief ramala with small pillows on the three sides were placed on Manji Sahib. Again a fine cloth was to cover all this and then Baba Ji used to install the Great Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

During the time of installation, the enhanced foldable piece of cardboard, which surrounds the body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, must always remain outside and never to be placed under the body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. (Some people fold it and place it beneath the body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which is wrong)

After installation, small side clothes (Palkan) were used which were to be further covered by a beautiful ramala .

One day a devotee asked Baba Ji, "Why is a Takhat-Posh essential for the installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?"

Baba Ji replied, "When we do ardaas before Satguru, we say 'Takhat, Chour De Malak' (The Master of throne and whisk). We do whisk, no doubt, but when we install the body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji over a small cot (Manji Sahib), where is [i[takhat[/i] (throne). Although we cannot make takhat worthy of the Great Guru, yet we should do as best possible as our capacity, by making a fine throne.

The Negligence in Doing Service

In the Gurdwara Rampur Khera, when the Great Guru was installed in the hut, Baba Ji had to go out for an urgent duty. While going out, he entrusted one devotee with the duty of paath of So Der and then of Sukh-Aasan (keeping Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji for rest at night). The second day, Baba Ji came, washed his hands and feet, and went to bow to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. After his bowing, he took order of the Great Guru.

As usual, he covered the body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with ramala and began to do simran there. Baba Ji used to say, During Simran, the Fifth Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, gave his holy glimpses and I felt that the eyes of the Great Guru were covered in such a way that something had struck in the eyes. I was very much surprised. I did a humble prayer in the feet of the Great Guru and asked for the reddish eyes. The Great Guru uttered, "Bhai Harnam Singh you yourself should do our service; yesterday, the devotee to whom you had entrusted the duty of our service collected ramallas in a very haste and didnt do service with the love and affection, the folds, crinckles and creases of the ramalas kept on itching me throughout the night in the eyes. So my eyes are red due to that. In future, any devotee who is to serve, should be instructed to do service with proper care and affection."

From that day onward, Baba Ji started doing service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with his own hands and in the old age, he would stand nearby and remove folds, layers and creases of the ramallas , inspiring others to do so. At night, the Great Guru was auspiciously seated on a big, magnificent cot, covered by either warm or cotten clothes as per weather conditions. In the winter season, a quilt was to be placed over the body of the Great Guru. In the summer season, a cooler or a fan was to be kept on. The neighboring environment was perfumed. Whenever he was to go in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, he would wash his hands and feet, put hazooria around his neck and wear a double turban (dastaar). The rest of the sangat aws also instructed to behave like this.

These days, Granthi Singhs and Pathi Singhs commit a great ideal of negligence in the service and devotional emotions of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The whole Sikh nation needs alertness regarding it. During paath, all our physical actions sholud be done with hazooria. Secondly, some people are in the habit of keeping their elbows of Manji Sahib for shelter. This impolite and disrespecting behavior needs change. The organs (pages) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji should be turned over gently with respect. Lastly, it is prayed in the feet of the Great Guru to grant us force, intellect to do service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with emotional devotion.
