Members of the Sikh community have strongly condemned an animated video of Guru Nanak Dev on YouTube and demanded its immediate withdrawal along with an apology from its producers.

Followers of the religion and many others have termed the video as derogatory and hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikhs. A brainchild of film and television studio Rajshri Productions, the video is online under the Rajshri Kids Channel banner. The channel mentions on YouTube: Guru Nanak was a man of God who loved people and taught them the path of true faith and worship. Millions follow his teachings in their lives. This animated video will help children imbibe the sublime values that the great Guru taught.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said that the film had hurt the religious sentiments of the community. “Nobody has the right to portray the Sikh Guru non-seriously and hence they should withdraw the film immediately,” he said, adding that they would initiate legal action against Rajshri Productions. “We will constitute a committee to look into the matter and submit its report. The company will be asked to seek forgiveness from the SGPC,” Makkar said.

The video has also created a global furore and a widespread condemnation campaign has kicked off on various social networking websites, including Facebook and Twitter.

What was wrong with that? That was quite good for really little kids, guess its not great but its better than nothing. And the post states that Makkar said: “Nobody has the right to portray the Sikh Guru non-seriously", that animation didnt seemed to be serious though and not taking the mick... could somebody clarify whats exactly wrong with it? The end was a bit rushed as they didnt state that guru jee said that whichever side the flowers will be is what shall be done with my body (buried or cremated)... so whats wrong with the animation?

Following reports of widespread protests by members of the Sikh community over an animated video of Guru Nanak Dev, the producers have withdrawn the same from YouTube.

The Tribune had, yesterday, highlighted the protest by the Sikh community, “Sikh’s want Guru’s animated video taken off YouTube,” against the animation video, which was a brainchild of film and television studio Rajshri Productions, and were shown on YouTube under the banner of Rajshri Kids Channel.

Following news reports, city resident Preet Chandoke had written a mail to the producers of the videos, Rajshri Productions, along with a copy of the news item today. Taking immediate note of the matter, the company withdrew the controversial video from YouTube and also, wrote back to Chandoke regarding the same. “I got a mail today from a representative of Rajshri Productions that the production house did not mean to hurt the sentiments of anybody and that, the video had been removed. They also promised not to upload such material on the Internet in future," Chandoke said.
