Previously nihangsingh.org posted the “Rehitnama Bhai Nand Lal Ji”, which is the code of conduct for the Sikhs that was uttered from the holy mouth of the 10th King, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. We are now pleased to post the “Tankahnama Bhai Nand Lal Ji”. The Tankahnama was written by Bhai Nand Lal Singh Ji “Goya” after the creation of the Khalsa brotherhood. Passages from the Tankahnama are also sung everyday by Sikhs around the world during the collective prayer called the Ardas, as well sections of the Tankahnama form part of the hymn Arti-Arta.

In the Tankahnama, Bhai Nand Lal Ji ask’s Guru Ji questions on acts that may be commited and the Guru responds with the punishment or reward that would be deserving of that act. Below is the Tankahnama:

ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਆ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਤਾਈਏੇ ਮੋਹਿ

Nand Lal asked, “Guru Ji, enlighten me,

ਕੌਣ ਕਰਮ ਇਨ ਜੋਗ ਹੈਂ ਕੌਣ ਕਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਹਿ ॥ (੧)

Which deed is ethical and which is not becoming.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਤੁਮ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਰਮ ਹੈ ਏੇਹਿ

Nand Lal, listen to this speech, the Sikh conduct is this,

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਬਿਨ ਕਰੇ ਨਾ ਅੰਨ ਸਿਉੁਂ ਨਹੁ ॥ (੨)

Without the celestial name, charity and bathing, a Sikh should not savour food.

ਚੋਪਈ

Chaupai

ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰਾ ਤਾਕਾਲ ਸਤਸਿੰਗ ਨਾ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

One who does not participate in the true congregation early in the morning,

ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਦਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਹਾਵੇ ॥ (੩)

Will be adjudged as deserving a religious retribution.

ਸਤਸਿੰਗ ਜਾਇ ਕਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਡੁਲਾਵ

The one who participates in the true-congregation half-heartedly

ਈਹਾਂ ਉੁਹਾਂ ਠੋਰ ਨਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ (੪)

Will find shelter neither here or there (this realm or the next).

ਹਰਿ ਜਸ ਸੁਣਤੇ ਬਾਤ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥

While listening to the celestial glories, (one who) starts idle-talks,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੋਹ ਜਮ ਪੁਰ ਜਾਵੇ (੫)

Says Gobind Singh, goes to abode of hell.

ਨਿਰਧਨ ਦੇਖ ਨਾ ਪਾਸ ਬਹਾਵੈ ॥

Coming across a poor-man, if he does not entertain him,

ਸੋ ਤਨਖਾਹੀ ਮੂਲ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ (੬)

He obtains the fundamental punishment.

ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗਿਆਨ ਬਿਨ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਬਾਤ ॥

One who talks without the knowledge of the celestial word,

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਕਛੂ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਥ ॥ (੭)

Benefits by nothing at all.

ਸ਼ਬਦ ਭੋਗ ਨਾ ਨਿਵਾਵੇ ਸੀਸ ॥

If he does not pay his obeisance to the shabad,

ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਾ ਪਰਮ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥ (੮)

He will not merge with the Supreme Being.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕੋ ਬਾਂਟ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਮੇਂ ਧਾਰੇ ਲੋਭ

One who distributes prashad with greed in his heart.

ਕਸਿੇ ਥੋੜਾ ਕਸਿੇ ਅਗਲਾ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੇ ਤਸਿ ਸੋਗ ॥ (੯)

More to some and less to others, he will forever remains in affliction.

ਚੌਪਈ

Chaupai

ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕੀ ਬਿੱਧ ਸੁਣ ਲੀਜੈ

Listen to the procedure of preparing the karah prashad.

ਤੀਨ ਭਾਂਤ ਕੋ ਸਮਸਰ ਕੀਜੇ ॥ (੧੦)

Take three components in equal quantity (sugar, butter, flour)

ਲੇਪਣ ਆਗੇ ਬਹੁਕਰ ਦੀਜੈ

After brooming, mud-plastering the floor,

ਮਾਂਜਣ ਧਰ ਭਾਂਜਣ ਧੋਵੀਜੈ ॥ (੧੧)

And using the scrubber, wash all the utensils.

ਕਰਿ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੇ

Then take a bath and cleanse yourself,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨ ਅਵਰ ਨਾ ਕਹੇ ॥ (੧੨)

And, except Vaheguru, the Almighty, utter nothing else.

ਨਵਤਨ ਕਸਿੰਭ ਪੂਰ ਜਲ ਲੇਹ

Take a pitcherful of fresh water,

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਫਲ ਤਿਨ ਦੇਹ ॥ (੧੩)

Then, Gobind Singh says, he will be physically fit.

ਕਰਿ ਤਿਆਰ ਚੌਕੀ ਪਰ ਧਰੇ

After preparing it, place it on a stool,

ਚਾਰ ਓਰ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਬਹਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ (੧੪)

With holy hymns flowing in all the four directions.

ਦੌਹਰਾ

ਮੋ ਹਰ ਤੁਰਕ ਕੀ ਸਿਰ ਧਰੇ ਲੋਹ ਲਗਾਵੈ ਚਰਨ

One who bows his head to a Turk (enemy) and surrenders his sword at his feet,

ਕਹੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁਣੋ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਫਿਰ ਫਿਰ ਹੋਏੇ ਤਸਿ ਮਰਨ ॥ (੧੫)

Gobind Singh says, “Listen Lal Ji, he runs into the cycle of life and death.”

ਚੌਪਈ

Chaupai

ਲਗੈ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਸੁਣ ਮੂਲ ਨਾ ਜਾਵੈ

One who never goes to the divine congregation,

ਰਹਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਰਤਾਵੈ ॥ (੧੬)

And distributes the karah prashad without proper conduct.

ਸੂਹਾ ਪਹਿਣ ਲਏੇ ਨਸਵਾਰ

One who wears red and uses tobacco,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਖਵਾਰ ॥ (੧੭)

Gobind Singh says, he will be punished by the messanger of death.

ਮਾਇ ਬੈਣ ਜੋ ਆਵੈ ਸੰਗਤਿ

When sisters and mothers come to the congregation,

ਦ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਿ਼ਟ ਬੁਰੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਤਸਿ ਪੰਗਤ ॥ (੧੮)

One who casts an evil eye at their row,

ਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਜੋ ਕਰਤ ਕਰੋਧ

And being a Sikh, if he renders anger,

ਕੰਨਿਆ ਮੂਲ ਨਾ ਦੇਵੇ ਸੋਧ ॥ (੧੯)

(He) loses the respect which a daughter could endow.

ਧੀ ਭੈਣ ਕਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਖਾਇ

One who plunders the wealth of a daughter or a sister,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਧੱਕੇ ਜਮ ਖਾਇ ॥ (੨੦)

Says Gobind Singh, he is pushed towards the devil.

ਸਿਖ ਹੋਏੇ ਬਿਨ ਲੋਹ ਜੋ ਫਿਰੈ

Being a Sikh if one goes around without a sword,

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੇ ਮਰੇ ॥ (੨੧)

He comes and goes through birth and death.

ਮਾਲ ਅਤਿਥਿ ਕਾ ਬਲ ਕਰੇ ਛਲੈ

If he swindles the effects of his guest,

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਨਹਿਫਲੈ ॥ (੨੨)

All his prayer and worship bear no fruit.

ਸੋਰਠਾ

Sortha

ਕੰਘਾ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਵਕਤ ਕਰ ਪੱਗ ਚੁਣੇ ਕਰ ਬਾਂਧਈ

One should comb their hair and tie their turban twice a day,

ਦਾਤਨ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ਨਾ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ॥ (੨੩)

Should clean the teeth, O’ Lal Ji, this way one will never suffer.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਦਸਵੰਧ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਹਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਜੋ ਖਾਇ

One who does not spare one tenth of their income for the Guru and revels in lies,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਤਸਿ ਕਾ ਕਛੂ ਨਾ ਬਸਿਾਹਿ ॥ (੨੪)

Lal Ji, Gobind Singh says, should not be trusted.

ਚੌਪਈ

Chaupai

ਠੰਡੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਹਾਵੈ

If he does not take bath in cold water,

ਬਿਨ ਜਪੁ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦਿ ਜੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ (੨੫)

And without reading Jap Ji Sahib, takes his food,

ਬਿਨ ਰਹਿਰਾਸ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਜੋ ਖੋਵੈ

Without saying Rehras, passes the evening,

ਕੀਰਤਨ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਬਿਨ ਰੈਣ ਜੋ ਸੋਵੇ ॥ (੨੬)

Without reciting Kirtan (Sohila) goes to sleep,

ਚੁਗਲੀ ਕਰ ਜੋ ਕਰਜ ਬਿਗਾਰੈ ॥

Through slander he conducts his affairs,

ਧ੍ਰ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਸਿ ਜਨਮ ਜੋ ਧਰਮ ਬਸਿਾਰੈ ॥ (੨੭)

Cursed is his birth if he forgets the righteousness.

ਕਰੇ ਬਚਨ ਜੋ ਪਾਲੈ ਨਹੀਂ

One who stands not by his words,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਸਿ ਠੋਰ ਕਤ ਨਾਹੀਂ ॥ (੨੮)

Says Gobind Singh, he is honoured nowhere.

ਲੈ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਸ ਜੋ ਖਾਵੈ

One who eats meat taken from Turks,

ਬਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਬਚਨ ਜੋ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ (੨੯)

One who utters any words except the Guru’s Shabad,

ਤ੍ਰ੍ਰਿਯ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਿ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਏੇ

Puts their heart listening to bad music,

ਸੁਣਹ ਲਾਲ ਸੋ ਜਮ ਪੁਰ ਜਾਏੇ ॥ (੩੦)

Listen, Lal Ji, he heads for the abode of hell.

ਚੌਪਈ

ਅਰਦਾਸ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਕਾਜ ਸਿਧਾਵੇ

Without ardas one who commences a task,

ਭੇਟ ਕੀਏੇ ਬਿਨ ਕੁਛ ਮੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ (੩੧)

Prior to offering, puts something in the mouth.

ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਸਤ ਗਹਿਣ ਜੇ ਕਰੈ

Abandoned belongings, one who takes away,

ਬਿਨ ਤ੍ਰ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਜੋ ਧਰੋ ॥ (੩੨)

And takes an other’s wife to bed.

ਅਤਿਥਿ ਵੇਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਵੈ ਦਾਨ

One who does not serve an approaching guest,

ਸੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਵੈ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਾਨ ॥ (੩੩)

He won’t be honoured in the divine court

ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਥਾ ਸਿਉੁਂ ਮਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਵੈ

If he does not listen to the teachings and singing of hymns,

ਸੰਤ ਸਿਖ ਕੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਲਾਵੈ ॥ (੩੪)

And abuses a saintly Sikh,

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਜੂਆ ਹਰੇ ਜੋ ਮਾਲ

Through slander and gambling, if he gains,

ਮਹਾਂ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਸਿ ਕੋ ਕਾਲ ॥ (੩੫)

He suffers great pain through death.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾ ਕਾਨ

For not listening to the slander of the Guru’s,

ਭੇਟ ਕਰੋ ਤਸਿ ਸੰਗ ਕਿਰਪਾਨ ॥ (੩੬)

Honour him by offering a sword.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਗੋਲਕ ਰਾਖ ਨਾਹਿ ਜੋ ਛਲ ਕਾ ਕਰੈ ਵਪਾਰ

One who does not keep the charitable cashbox and indulges in deceitful trade,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਭੋਗੇ ਨਰਕ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ॥ (੩੭)

Says Gobind Singh, Lal Ji, he suffers through thousands of hells.

ਚੌਪਈ

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨ ਕਹੇ ਜੋ ਖਾਵੈ

Without worshipping Vaheguru, one who eats,

ਵੈ ਸਵਾ ਦਵਾਰੇ ਸਿਖ ਜੋ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ (੩੮)

The Sikh who pays visit to a prostitute,

ਪਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰੀ ਸਿਉੁਂ ਨੇਹਸਿੁੰ ਲਗਾਵੇ

Who revels with an other’s wife,

ਕਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੁਹ ਸਿਖ ਨਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ (੩੯)

Says Gobind Singh, such a Sikh is not regarded.

ਗੁਰ ਤਲਪੀ ਕਪਟੀ ਹੈ ਜੋਇ

One who is cunning and impostor for the Guru,

ਬਡੋ ਤਨਖਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੋ ਸੋਇ ॥ (੪੦)

He should be considered severely punishable.

ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਛੋਡ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਉੁਂ ਮਾਂਗੇ

Abandoning the Guru, one who goes to beg from others,

ਰਾਤਰੀ ਸੋਏੇ ਤੇੜ ਹਇ ਨਾਂਗੇ ॥ (੪੧)

And sleeps at night without anything on,

ਨਗਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਰ ਭੋਗ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ

Unclothed one who revels in sex,

ਨਗਨ ਹੋਇ ਜਲ ਮੱਜਣ ਕਰੇ ॥ (੪੨)

And all naked cleans his teeth,

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਨਗਨ ਹੋਇ ਬਾਹਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਨਗਨ ਸੀਸ ਜੋ ਖਾਇ

One who goes around naked or eats bare headed,

ਨਗਨ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜੋ ਬਾਂਟਈ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹੀ ਬਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ॥ (੪੩)

Or gives out prashad in a naked state is adjudged as a big offender.

ਚੌਪਈ

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੇ

Khalsa is the one who abandons slander,

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਲੜੇ ਹੋਇ ਆਗੈ ॥ (੪੪)

Khalsa is the one who is in the front of the battle,

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਪੰਚ ਕੋ ਮਾਰੈ

Khalsa is the one who kills the five vices.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਸਾੜੈ ॥ (੪੫)

Khalsa is the one who burns away their previous actions.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਮਾਨ ਜੋ ਤਿਆਗੈ

Khalsa is the one who abandons their ego,

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਪਰਤ ਆ ਤੇ ਭਾਗੈ ॥ (੪੬)

Khalsa is the one who keeps away from another’s wife.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਪਰਦ੍ਰ੍ਰਸਿ਼ਟਿ ਕੋ ਤਿਆਗੇ

Khalsa is the one who does not imitate the others’ viewpoint.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਨਾਮ ਰਤ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ (੪੭)

Khalsa is the one who is infused with the divine name of God,

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹਿਤ ਲਾਇ

Khalsa is the one who puts his heart into Gurbani.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਸਾਰ ਮੁੰਹਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ (੪੮)

Khalsa is the one who can eat the steel.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਖ਼ਲਕ ਖਾਲਿਕ ਕੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਲਕ ਦੁਖਾਵੈ ਨਾਹਿ

Regarding the creation as that of the Creator, one should not exploit the creation.

ਖ਼ਲਕ ਦੁਖੈ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਖਾਲਿਕ ਕੋਪੈ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ (੪੯)

If creation is put in agony, Lal Ji, the Creator is not pleased.

ਛੌਪਈ

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕੋ ਪਾਲੈ

Khalsa is the one who looks after the poor.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਕੋ ਗਾਲੇ ॥ (੫੦)

Khalsa is the one who annihilates the the evil-doers.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕਰੈ

Khalsa is the one who remembers the divine name.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਮਲੇਛ ਪਰ ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ॥ (੫੧)

Khalsa is the one who invades the barbarians.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉੁਂ ਜੋੜੇ

Khalsa is the one who is permeated with the celestial name of God.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੋ ਤੋੜੇ ॥ (੫੨)

Khalsa is the one who destroys their bondage.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਤੁਰੰਗ

Khalsa is the one who rides the horse.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੰਗ ॥ (੫੩)

Khalsa is the one who is ever ready for righteous war.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਕੋ ਧਾਰੈ

Khalsa is the one who adorns the arms.

ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸੋਇ ਦੁਸੰਟ ਕੋ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ (੫੪)

Khalsa is the one who exterminates the vicious.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਦੋਹੀ ਫਿਰੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੈ ਨਾ ਕੋਇ

Outcry prevails for the Almighty and the slander fosters no one.

ਬਨ ਪਰਬਤ ਸਭ ਭਜ ਗੇ ਤ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰ ਹ ਜਗਤ ਮੇਂ ਸੋਇ ॥ (੫੫)

The hills and forests in all the three domains of creation will remember him.

ਸੁਣੋ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਏੇਹੌ ਸਾਚ

Listen, Nand Lal, this is the truth,

ਪਰਗਟ ਕਰਾਊੂਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਾਜ ॥ (੫੬)

Through which I reveal my kingdom.

ਚਾਰ ਬਰਨ ਇਕ ਬਰਨ ਕਰਾਊੂਂ

All the four castes, I have made into one caste,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਜਾਪ ਜਪਾਊੂਂ ॥ (੫੭)

Who recite the name of Vaheguru.

ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੈਂ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਉੁੜਾਵੈਂ ਬਾਜ

They will mount the horse and fly the falcon,

ਤੁਰਕ ਦੇਖ ਕਰ ਜਾਵੈਂ ਭਾਜ ॥ (੫੮)

Seeing them, Turks (enemies) will flee.

ਸਵਾ ਲਾਖ ਸੇ ਏੇਕ ਲੜਾਊੂਂ

I will make one combat a hundred and twenty-five thousand.

ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਸਿ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰਾਊੂਂ ॥ (੫੯)

That Singh, will be liberated.

ਝੂਲਣ ਨੇਜ਼ੇ ਹਸਤੀ ਸਾਜੇ

The spears wave and the elephants are decorated,

ਦੁਆਰ ਦੁਆਰ ਪਰ ਨੌਬਤ ਬਾਜੇ ॥ (੬੦)

At every door the victory drums beat.

ਸਵਾ ਲਾਖ ਜਬ ਧੁਖੈ ਪਲੀਤਾ

When a hundred and twenty-five thousands fire-works sparkle,

ਤਬ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਉੁਦੈ ਅਸਤ ਲੋ ਜੀਤਾ ॥ (੬੧)

Then realise that the Khalsa has attained victory.

Dohira

ਰਾਜ ਕਰੇਗਹ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਆਕੀ ਰਹੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਇ

The Khalsa will rule and the rebels will be eliminated,

ਖ਼ਵਾਰ ਹੋਇ ਸਭ ਮਿਲੇਂਗੇ ਬਚੇ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ॥ (੬੨)

All will be obliged to join and only those who surrender will survive.

ਬਚਨ ਹੈ ਸ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਖ ਦਾ ਬੇਟਾ ਹੋਏੇ ਔੌਰ ਮੋਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵੈ

This is the command of the Guru, that if the son of a Sikh shaves their head,

ਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸ ਕੀ, ਔੌਰ ਜੋ ਮੋਨਾ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵੈ ਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹਰੀ ॥

His posterity will be ruined, and if a shaven one becomes Sikh, his descendants will flourish.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰ੍ਰ੍ਰੀ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਮਾ ਸੰਪੂਰਨੰ ॥
