Maharashtra to probe car dealer’s ‘torture’ by revenue sleuths

Mumbai, Sep 27 (IANS) The Maharashtra government Tuesday ordered a probe into a complaint by a car dealer who accused the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) investigators of ‘torture’ while probing a customs duty evasion case against him.

Mohinderpal Singh Gujral, a 51-year-old Sikh businessman who deals in imported vehicles, accused the investigators of partially chopping off his beard. Acting on his complaint the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has sought a reply from the DRI and summoned its officials for a hearing Nov 15.

State Minorities Affairs and Textiles Minister Mohammed Naseem Khan wrote to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee about the incident and directed state’s Additional Chief Secretary, Minority Development, T.F. Thekkekara to inquire into the matter and submit his report within a month.

The minister also asked Additional Chief Secretary, Hom) Umesh Sarangi to inquire from Mumbai Police why Gujral’s complaint was not registered against the DRI officials.

Khan’s actions came after a delegation of Sikhs from Mumbai led by Congress legislator Charan Singh Sapra called on him demanding justice for Gujral.
