What Is A Mahant?

On researching net mahant associated before 1920 before Gurdwara reform act, but as don't know much about sikhi, if it is applied to somebody of nowadays what does it mean?

I know of sant, brahmgiani, mahapursh terms, but never heard this one, also what would their role be, would they be similar to a sant such as helping people?

Also do udasi sant have long hair?

Khalsa Ji,

A Mahant is the person in charge of the day to day running of a Sant dera etc. Traditionally, in the past, most of the historical Gurdwareh, in India, were managed by Mahant. Nowadays, however, their role is to manage the dera of a Sant etc.
