where can someone get a taus from?

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Yeah, the taus is indeed a very beautiful instrument. I also have a postcard picture from the V&A of one with real peacock feathers...(BTW peacocks shed these naturally and they come in handy to scare away any lizards, supposedly- I think kirleean are becoming immune and too 'nidar' in India!). I (or more rather my masarr ji) got my Dilrubaa and sitar from Gurdial Singh and sons in Jallandhar. They are based on Railway Rd, where there are also some other music stores, like Calcutta Music House. DTF import some of their stuff from them (and are rip-offs!!). It's best to go there yourself if you can and/or with the advice of a pro (who also knows the price ranges so you don't have to haggle too much), with a clear specification of what you want; Gurdial Singh's are specialists in manufacturing tanti saaj.

'rsingh' have you actually got a taus (and are you gonna give it to Kandola bhaji?!). If so, !

Bhai Avtaar Singh Ragi is accompanied by his grand-nephew, Bhai Baldeep Singh Ji, on the taus. Bhai sahib ji is an 11th generation ragi in an unbroken chain from Guru ji's times. The stringed and bowed instrument was originally created by Guru Hargobind Sahib in the 17th century and was used by ragis till nearly 50 yrs ago, when it became extinct. Bhai Avtar Singh ji has not only kept alive this tradition, but also constructed their taus with his own hands! ^_^ (I'm not suggesting you get him to make you one as well.....I wanna get there first!! wink2.gif

'rsingh', I know Surinder Singh used to teach in Royal Leamington Spa a few years back. Does he or any of his associates now teach in the Midlands? They seem to be based mainly in London. Also, has anyone got the 'Mere Mun' CD set and accompanying book by Sikh Musical Heritage?

Never mind, I'm gonna try and get a few exclusive private lessons from Bhai Avtar Singh Ji next time he comes! pray.gif They were so friendly and chardi kalaa. During their programme in July, he met us as if we'd known eachother for ages! :DNo signs of majaaj that you seen in so many other ragis/ 'keertaniyae' :| .

WOW! I'm in awe.. :Re:waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru...Guru ji kirpa karan pray.gif

well i am actually considering trying to master the taus. but before that, i ought to be concentrating on my GCSE mock exams which are in december and then going on to consider it. as part of one of my a-levels, i'd like to do music, but according to the cirriculum, i should have done GCSE music (which i did not do, instead i did stupid french, and by the time i wanted to quit it, it was whey to late, still its ok now. but i think its better to play an instrument then sit in rows and learn some language that you'll never speak of when your old hey?) or i should know how to play an instrument. so i thought why not dilruba? but a gursikh friend of mine said that our gurdwara teaches sitar and taus (similiar to taus), and i thought, why not learn from there? (if i pass mock exams, which is then when i make the final decision).

but as an old saying goes ji, always best to plan ahead :e:

anyway, thanks jio.

i have learnt, balwinder singh rangila school are here at the east park road gurdwara (by that i mean, shehat aap nu patha hai ji, but he has made a school in chandigarh, in which some of the teachers there not only will teach vajaa, but also tabla and sitar, but the receptionist also said they do taus as well).

ok now, how easy is it to play the taus? and like the dilruba, does it have some frets so it can guide you to the right notes?
