Do You Use Sat Nav ?

This is not really a techie project but a project to put our Gurdwara on the Map (Sat Nav Map) so I have posted in the general forum as it should solicit more replies.

I am sure you all know what Sat Nav is and no doubt many of you have access to some sort of device that can be used for such purposes whether it is a PDA (running Tom Tom or Navigator) or a dedicated Sat Nav unit.

Well I was a bit bored today so I after trying to break a few bricks with my little finger and watching my Shaolin tuition DVD, I thought why not make a Point of Interest file to cover every Gurdwara in the UK (not sure if it has been done before).

I have been able to produce a working file for Garmin units (208 Gurdwara) which I will test over the next few days. A Khanda will pop up on the screen to indicate a Gurdwaras location when you are driving (thats the theory anyway). So you can turn off your gangsta rap and think about Waheguru as you drive past a Guru Ghar (you may have to throw the gangsta rap tape/CD out the window in some areas as there are lots of Guru Ghar in the locality) .

So please can the UK sangat tell me what Sat Nav units they are using or have access to. I will post the Garmin compatible files after testing but need someone to test a Tom Tom overlay, Maptech Marks etc etc. So if you have these Sat Nav units or the right software running on your PDA then please let me know via PM and I will send you a link for the file to test.

Thanks.

Taksali Singh Ji, please would you be willing to test a Tom Tom compatible overlay ? I have all the files and can produce the necessary Tom Tom .OV2 file in minutes if you are willing to test it. I have not used a Tom Tom unit so will be unable to offer any help on how this file is installed on such a unit but I am sure there are countless resources on the web to point you in the right direction if needed.

I have uploaded a UK Gurdwara POI file to my Garmin i3 unit and it appears to work fine. Its quite kewl I can navigate to my POI list and go to Gurdwara and it lists all the Gurdwara and their distance from my current position so I can easily navigate to the nearest Gurdwara. Also when driving it makes a noise and a Khanda on the Sat Nav Map alerts you to a Gurdwara nearby (Just like the way it alerts you to a nearby speed camera when you put the gatso POI on)

For my addresses I have used the list of Gurdwara on the BOSS web site. I am willing to add more addresses for Guru Ghar in the UK if required.

Also if anyone else is using any other Sat Nav software please let me know and I will try and produce a POI file for your unit/setup.

Okay, so how does it work,  blush.gif   like say if you got one of them Navigation Systems that are already fitted into the vehicle and they are updated by buying the new Naviagtion CD every year, will it work with them?

Yes it should work. Most Sat Nav software has an option to add Points of Interest so it is just a case of getting the right files and then following instructions to add it as a POI.

I have updated my speed cameras a few times and have now added the UK Gurdwara as a POI. It works fine and took less than 20 seconds to update.

I have not really messed about with Sat Nav units built into cars but you can easily add POI to Garmin and Tom Tom setups.

(Taksali please check your PM)

If anyone else in the UK wants to test these points of interest then feel free to PM me for the link. Please state what Sat Nav unit or software you are using so I can send you the correct file link.

My dream project (assuming this one goes ok) is to get GPS co-ordiantes for every Gurdwara in the World, ah if only someone would be willing to fund this, I am more than willing to travel across asia for a few months gathering co-ordinates.

In fact if any brother or sister from Canada, USA, Germany or any other country has a few hours spare and they want to be part of the Gurdwara SatNav project please drop me a PM. You will need access to a few bits of software but most microsoft desktop users have these installed and a list of Gurdwara in your country (full address if possible).

Please dont worry you do not have to walk around in an anorak with a hand held GPS unit (like I did) you can wear a Kurta Pyjama and carry a hip flask of fresh milk badam instead...only joking. You can do everything from your home.

I am not sure how many Gurdwara there are in the USA and Canada in the UK I used a list of about 208 Guru Ghar and it did not take long to generate the files needed. You will be contributing to a worthwhile project and doing something useful for the Sikh Quam.

Please check your instructions and see if there is an option to add POI from an external source and what format the files should be in. Let me know of the format and I will see what I can conjure up.

From what I have read some of these built in Sat Nav units are not as flexible as the Tom Tom and Garmin units when it comes to adding information from external sources such as the Gurdwara POI or the Gatso Speed Camera POI. They cost a lot more as well. They do take all the points in the looks department.

    • Definitely the Guru Sahibs would be a heavier Scriptures to handle. Dasam Granth is more towards Bir Rass, Guru Gobind Singh showed his Greatness (of course, they would never say this) by separating his own Baania.  And the BIGGEST test of all?? Do we try and read Dasam Granth, Understand n show respect like we do to SGGS? Or... Do we QUESTION it? Guru Gobind Singh Ji is testing us.
    • My wife will be going for an MRI scan next week but her Kara won’t physically come off.  Is there any way the mri scan can be done with the Kara still on?  The alternative is we will have to try to saw it off before the scan.
    • was researching this and came back to this thread. Also found an older thread:
    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
