AMRITSAR: The unity of the Akali factions of former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Akali veteran Gurcharan Singh Tohra could be viewed as a wise political decision. For Tohra, the move would mean survival in Punjab’s polity. The hope of the BJP at the centre has also been revived. The BJP is not only looking towards capturing maximum Parliamentary seats during the impending Lok Sabha elections but is also expecting to make a clean sweep of the panchayat polls. Political observers here believe that both Badal and Tohra were in a no win situation and had got together out of their own political compulsions under the pressure of BJP’s central leadership. The…

Sex education call by leaders Jun 17 2003 By Sophie Blakemore, Birmingham Post Religious leaders have called for communities in Birmingham to abandon taboos and support the provision of sex education in the city's schools. The city's Council of Sikh Gudwaras said the health and well-being of young people was more important in today's society than out-dated beliefs. Sewa Singh Mandla, chairman of the council, said it was time to make sure youngsters were properly educated about safe sex but it was also important to consult religious leaders about these sensitive matters. "At one time sex education was not freely talked about but now we have to talk about it because …

The Metropolitan Police said serving Muslim officers in London had asked to be allowed to wear their turbans. A spokesman said: "Whilst many Muslim officers will not necessarily choose to wear the turban there are serving Muslim officers who will benefit from this new policy and have asked for it. "Authority has now been granted for them to wear their turbans instead of the current headwear." Sikh officers in the Met have been able to wear turbans while in uniform for many years. Last year female Muslim officers were told they would be allowed to wear their traditional headscarves, or hijabs, on duty. Mohammad Mahroof, Secretary General of the Association of Muslim P…

Jim Walsh The Arizona Republic Jun. 16, 2003 01:00 PM A defense attorney conceded in court Monday that in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, his client shot to death a Sikh gas-station owner and committed driveby shootings at a Lebanese-owned gas station and an Iraqi man's home. Lawyer Dan Patterson made the admission as part of a guilty-but-insane defense strategy he plans to use in the upcoming trial of Frank Roque, 43. The Mesa man is accused of gunning down Balbir Singh Sodhi, 49, in retaliation for the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City and at the Pentagon building near Washington, D.C. During his arrest, according…

i think bascially punjabis should stop worrying about khalistan. there is no need anymore. i used to support khalistan, but i find there is no use for it. think about it, punjabi people are stupid enough to vote for congress, even sikhs voted for congress. then who's to say that they would want khalsitan. i think there were gross human abuses, but instead of separating, lets try to make punjab a beacon of democracy for the rest of india. instead ofkilling those who killed our people, go to various pinds and support charitable organizations india shouldn't be a hindu country. Sikhism should be India's relgion. I honestly belive if people did parchar in Goa, Tamil N…

A Warning to the Sikh community about Gurbakhsh Singh Kala-Afghana. The Sikh community outside of India has managed to prosper in a relatively short period of time as a result of devoted service, hard work, meeting multiple challenges internal and external, and enduring in many cases much hardship. It has become a robust, vibrant community and slowly people everywhere are taking note of the values and teachings of the Sikh Gurus. The Sikh heritage and history are replete with the finest examples of personal sacrifice and nobility of spirit. There are people who would change history and undermine the Gurus teachings by spreading false concepts to the congregations and …

To the Sikh Sadh-Sangat at large: Please note that a heretic group headed by a self-styled ‘guru’ is aggressively recruiting unsuspecting people on-line and at their local base in Toronto. These people espouse beliefs that are counter to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and include: 1) the belief in living a Guru. The present guru is known by the name Nariender Grewal. His followers bow their heads to his feet instead of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. 2) like the Kala-Afghana group, they do not believe in the institution of Panj Piarays or Amrit Sanchaar. 3) they claim that ‘Satnaam’ is the real Gurmantar and not ‘Waheguru’ 4) they have changed Panthic Parvaant GurFateh f…

1984 - 1995 : Time for a De-brief Rear-Admiral Satyindra Singh, AVSM (Retd.) Noted commentator, Vir Sanghvi, currently Editor of the popular weekly, Sunday, recently assessed Mrs. Gandhi’s legacy thus: "She did a lot of damage (to Indian polity).... In retrospect it seems clear that she either destroyed or subverted most of the institutions of Indian Democracy. She destroyed the powers of state chief ministers and damaged the federal structure. She pressurised the judiciary and sapped its independence by appointing mediocre judges, and transferring to inconsequential and uncomfortable outpost judges who dared to assert their independence. She damaged the independence …

AMRITSAR: The martyrdom day of Guru Arjun Dev was observed on Monday- according to the newly introduced Nanakshahi calendar prepared under the aegis of the Akal Takht. Earlier, few gurdwaras and Sikhs had observed the martyrdom day on June 4- as per the old dates. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) officials claimed that they had received numerous e-mails, fax messages and phone calls from Sikhs living around the globe, congratulating the committee for implementing the Nanakshahi calendar and observing the religious days according to it. SGPC officials also claimed that the ‘sangat’ had accepted the new dates for the Sikh religious days, as evident from the r…
