  1. In the 15+ years I have been listening to katha at our local guru ghar, never ever have I come across a katha vaachak "talkin rubbish goin around in circles, coz there memory is crap,"We have no right to put down parcharaks who are doing lot of seva for the panth while all we do is moan and complain on an online forum.

  2. Everyone who complains about non-english speakers in Gurdwara should go and become an English speaking parcharak themselves. Until then, you have absolutely no right to complain. Be the change.

  3. Scroll down for before and after picture! In the video Singh Ji explains why he became a Sikh, what caused the transformation. The rest of the videos on the same youtube channel are also very inspirational and informative. Photo taken from Cross Rd Gurdwara facebook page http://www.facebook....rdwara.coventry (add for lots of sikhi info and inspiration)

  4. His image should be up in all places in Punjab!!!!! Sikhi prachar should strictly be done in punjabi. These days alll resources are available for a person to learn punjabi. Sikhi prachar should be limited to kids or new comers. Make effort to learn punjabi. Rebel Singh, as per your replies, it will be okay for people in India to learn sikhi in Hindi language? (the same language that makes u uneasy?) What will happen to punjabi if we encourage all future pracharaks to use English in gurdwaras ? Punjabi will then only be limited to Punjab ? The same state where it's residents see this language as third grade stuff.

  5. I hope we never lose "dictionary Panjabi words". There's a time and place for everything. Let's not dumb everything down. I may also not understand uber-advanced Panjabi but that doesn't mean I want it banished off the face of the earth. I'll just have to try that bit harder to try and understand what's being said.

  6. bro, it is quite hateful thing to say another group of people are "filthy". That is not language appropriate for a Sikh to use, many non sikhs must read these forums, what impression will they get when they read such comments?

  7. Why 'and / or'? For a Sikh, English AND Panjabi should be studied until your eyes bleed and your head hurts, lol. They are both vitally important. Imagine being fluent in both and being able to read and write both!

  8. True, parchar in English needs to be done. But that can only happen if young Sikhs learn about Gurmat and become Parcharaks. Sikhs in every western country need to raise money and open up Taksals in the west. We need our own local Parcharaks/Gianis/Kathakars who can speak in the local language and reach out to people in the language they are comfortable in. That being said, the Punjabi langauge should not be discarded. For a Sikh Punjabi needs to be learnt. So much of Gurbani and other Sikh canonical scriptures can be understood by some one who has a perfect grasp of the Punjabi language. A serious seeker of Sikhism should always strive to have a perfect understandng of Punjabi.

  9. ^ I agree that English needs to be spoken at Gurdwara to cater to younger generation and other who do not understand Punjabi. But you have certainly gone too far by calling Punjabi boring and our precious kathavachaks "boring old farts on stage talkin nonsense". Events in English need to accompany Punjabi classes so that interest in Sikh is developed along with a deeper understanding of how important the Punjabi language is. What I usually see is only events in English taking place with absolutely no emphasis on importance of Punjabi. Hello!!!! if you can't read and understand Punjabi, how will you do paath?!!! If the trend that has started keeps up, then in a couple of generations people in the west won't be able to read Gurbani in the original form. Let's be honest, reading translations and/or transliterations comes no where near reading Gurmukhi. Punjabi is far far far superior to English.

  10. the sikh channel do brillaint parchar and have helped manny people obtain a general basic knowledge of sikhi. however at the same time, due to not vetting or on purpose allowing misguided individuals on tv knowingly they have caused great harm aswell. it was same sikh channel that did first live event from india and huge media hype on baba ranjit singh initially. if only we were this concerned and proactive when the channel presenters and panel openly call sri guru granth sahib ji a book - dr jagbir, sikh channel was approached and after meetings etc failed to appologise on air. dr udhoke speaking against sri dasam bani in a show. likewise panel members speaking against dasam bani and pro prof darshan sio. there are several things that have happened in the past. again the channels are needed and we all do definately need to support them, but at the same time they need to do gurmat parchar and not try and cater for everyone. whats sikhi should be said, what isnt should be refrained from. this is not only a problem with sikh channel, sangat tv have made several major blunders aswell, which we all know about, and as sikh channel are most likely reading this, i hope they do take these concerns on board, and do understand that its not an attack on them, but general observation. why is jaswant thekedar, mohinder rataul, dr jagbir etc allowed on tv? half are gurbani nindaks, thekedar called sant ji congress, its in sant jis tapes and is a sell out.

  11. Sukhwinder Singh seems like a trouble maker with an ulterior motive. I'm no follower of Dardianwalay, but I don't think he's a bad guy as some are doing propaganda against him. I will admit, even I was against him at one point because I was influanced by the propaganda. But thinking rationally and with a neutral mind, I asked myself who is doing the propaganda against him? From my personal experience, I have seen that it is mostly Kala Afghanis who are against him. Remember when Darshan Lal (before he was exposed as a Kala Afghani) started rudely arguing with Sant Dadrianwala in a radio show. Even now it is mostly Kala Afghanis who are doing the smear campaign against Dadrianwala. And if Kala Afghanis are so much against him, I will choose Dadrianwala's side over them anyday. Whenever Sikhs have had any major issue recently such as the protests against Noormahalia Ashutosh, or the recent killing of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Jee, Dadrianwala has been on the forefront where were these Kala Afghanis then who are doing all this propaganda against him? I'm still no fan of his, but knowing myself and from the perspective of my personal jeevan I'm in no position to point a finger at him.

  12. Maharaja Ranjit Singh listening to the Granth being recited near the Golden Temple, Amritsar. August Schoefft, ca. 1840's - 1855, Vienna, from a sketch made by Schoefft in Amritsar, 1841 I'm sure we've all seen this picture before but I had to post it again. I really do think this is breath-taking. The Granthi-sahib reading the bir on the right looks fantastic. Great colours and patterns which make the scene extremely vivid. I'm not sure why Maharaja Ranjit Singh feels the need to sit on a cushion / gadhi in the presence of Guru Sahib but there you go. Does anyone know what the little midget is doing at the bottom-middle of the picture? He looks like a court jester. Or is it a child?
