  1. Maya can come in any shape or form for any single individual. Just because it's made out of gold does not mean its maya. In that case don't go to harmandir sahib.. Maya is an addiction.. to anything. I don't like gold just because I don't like the way it looks. But I like silver. So is that maya? Yes it can be if I'm attached to it. I have to ask my mind, if I lost this right now would I go berserk? Or would I say 'oh well, it's just an ornament'? Maya is how your mind deals with materials in this world... Guru Gobind Singh Ji took a lot of pride in the way he dressed.. and rightly so.. he is the king! Does it mean he's stuck in maya? No... He knew how to control his mind. Jot Singh Khalsa is the most humblest person I know. His ethos is to have every sikh wear an actual kirpan. One with which you can fight with... none of those nuts and bolts jobs out there.. and he likes to dress the khalsa panth. There is nothing wrong with that. And rightly so, I think people should pay for it because if you didn't you sure as hell wouldn't appreciate it. And being an owner of some of Jot Singh's stuff.. I must say the love he puts into his work is really felt when you actually wear it. I think the khalsa should like the kings army! with beautiful dastaars and beautiful shastar.. but also humble enough to give it to a poor man should he need it.. but then this is just my opinion... you have the right to state yours satnam
  2. God we are so lucky.. read this horrific story http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...6/08/wkor08.xml
  3. WHEN??? When will stop being so difficult?
  4. Great opportunity to practice selflessness. I know people may be thinking.. 'yeah ... but i haven't the time'... 'i'm so busy' and so on, I can totally appreciate that. But this is an opportunity for us to share the wonder of Gurbani and what the Guru's gave us. We are so lucky to be born as Sikhs in this lifetime, to have access to and understand the miracle of Dhan Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It's not meant to be kept in privy of all others. It's meant to be shared and used for the greater good. Not just on the odd occasion of a daughter or son being born, or when someone buys a new house or car... but also when so many suffering children have extended out their hands continously, only to be let down by mere politics and maya which puts people in charge who fall short of helping others. So people, Sadh Sangat Jio! Let's help them! Look all around you and you see destruction. Destruction of the body, the soul, the psyche and now the world. Let's be the healing force which turns this destruction round on it's head back to great times of peace (relatively) and when human rights actually meant something. Let's get together in our thousands and make an impact! Fight the war of today and join us! Satnam!
  5. trying to keep this post at top if the sangat don't mind..
  6. Dear Sadh Sangat Jio, Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh In December, we will be commemorating the Saheedi Divas of the Shotey Sahibazadey. We will remember how these two young children walked boldly into the palms of death so that others would have the choice to live in freedom of expression, individuality and spirituality. At such a young age, they had the ability to recognize compassion to be the root of sikhi and the human race as one. Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji were tortured to death, as they aspired to be like their great father Guru Gobind Singh Ji who was the epitome of bravery and their grandfather Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji who was the quintessence of compassion. In the memory of these two great souls, we are encouraging the Sadh Sangat to take part in a 40-day meditation, which will begin on the 17th of November 2007 till the 26th of December 2007. This 'Prayer in Action' will be directed towards the suffering children around the world facing poverty and famine by no fault of their own. Together, we will directly affect children who are subjected to violence and exploitation everyday, as we who are more fortunate, carry on about our daily lives building careers and providing for our own. Although we can never re-pay Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Sahibzadey for what they gave us, we can in part strive to give something back to those less fortunate than us. Many kind sevadaars from all over the world have signed up to represent their region of the world. Their contact details can be found on www.sikhhelpline.com. All you have to do is to choose from the Mool Mantr, Japji Sahib, Sukhmani Sahib or a Sehaj Path to do for 40 days. Contact the representative for your area who will keep you informed on the details. If there is no person signed for your region, contact us and we will do everything to ensure you are able to take part in this global initiative. Take this opportunity to practice the fundamentals of Sikhi which our Gurus were firm examples of: compassion in thought and action. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries you may have. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh. http://sikhhelpline.com/cms/index.php?opti...1&Itemid=50
  7. Yes! The concept of punishment doesn't really sit well with me... it doesn't make sense.. My Guru is my best friend.. someone I invite round to watch a movie or have a sleepover with.. someone who knows me better than myself.. someone who watches out for me..
  8. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.. Absolutely agree with you penj. Statistics show that Sikhs are the most successfull of all races in this country. Sikhs occupy high ranking jobs. There are alot of Sikh doctors, lawyers, pharmacists etc. This is something to be proud of. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught us that we should integrate with society and that's how we do it. Open your dara (for guys) and to our Singhnia wear your dastaars to work and talk to people, integrate and help them. Your colleagues will then look up to you and admire Sikhs! They will tell their friends and their friends will tell their friends that Sikhs are great people! Guru Nanak Dev Ji inspired them well! If I saw a Singh or Singhni doctor in hospital I would defo want them to treat me! Hold successful positions because that will give us levy in this country by which we can make our voices heard by the public and government and have a hand in literally making this world a better place... You think you're wasting your time going to school? I don't think so! Look at the bigger picture. Satnam :WW:
  9. The concept itself of being 'Sikh' has always been here. Being Sikh is being a good human being (for me...) so the concept which was reminded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji has actually been here all along. I believe you can be a Muslim and still be Sikh or a Hindu and still be Sikh. There was this article in the National Geaographic about how 'Wahabism' had crept into Pakistan, and in the article was a description of this Muslim who for most of his life has been saving the poor, feeding them, housing them regardless of which sect or religion they belong to. He would take in new born girls who had been given up by families and has seen orphans grow up and later helping them to get married. He stated ' My first religion is not Islam, it is human rights'..... WOW! That is a Sikh right there. He is more Sikh than I am! So theoretically... Sikhs have always been here. A Sikh is not just in physical form.. more important than the physical is the spiritual which was here since time began. Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to remind us of that quality which every human should attain. That is the beauty of Sikhi and the beauty of God.
  10. Vjkk vjkf I would like to bring something to the attention of all Sikhs out there. What is happening in Burma today is exactly what our Guru's stood for. These Monks have risked their lives for the sake of others. There is no difference between what happened in 1984 and what has happened today. If anything, this is more important as this is in our present. It's all great and wonderful if you want to give your life for your religion, but let's try something else, let's try what Guru Teg Bahadur did... That is what make Sikhi SO beautiful and great. Guru Tegh Bahadur did not just defend his own, for the human race was his own and could not stand against oppression of any kind, against anyone. This is the responsibility which has been passed down today by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. If your name ends with Singh or Kaur, this is your responsibility. If you are a child of the Guru, it is your responsbility to show some kind of support (in any way) be it go there and stand with them or give a donation to charities supporting them. Do a kirtan darbar for SARBAT DA PHALA! This is who we are. Recognize this and help the human race. These monks have been marching the streets chanting prayers for the whole of the human race! That includes us! These monks, in their most difficult of times are chanting for peace on earth! Peace for everyone. They have been brutally killed while praying on the streets. These monks are more 'Sikh' than I am. What a great way to give your life. God, bless all those who stand in protest in the streets of Burma in your name, give them victory. Include them in your daily banis. These people are standing up against brutal people who run their country. This is not just a problem in some distant country, this is a problem against your human race. 'Recognize the whole human race as one' - Guru Sahib. Stand up and show what Sikhi is about with the compassion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the courage of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji with the acceptance of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. VAHEGURU! Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

  14. Great article - please take time to read (not written by moi) God Is Ram. Is Ram God? -Sikh Persective Ram katha jug jug atal. Guru Gobind Singh ji, while concluding his version of Ramavtr, said the story of Rama is from time immemorial and will remain so. A senior journalist friend once remarked that it is very easy to instigate and embarrass the Sikhs. Just ask a Sikh a very simple question: What is the importance of Rama in Sikhism? If he says it is of no significance then quote that Gurbani has vividly referred to Rama as an icon of goodness. Now if he says, "yes it is significant", then simply pin up the lapel of RSS on him. Either way it will start a spate of intrinisic skirmishes. The same is happening now. The Khalsa or the Panth of the Guru which had shattered the Khyber Pass and penetrated deep into the territories reversing the onslaught from West has the strenghth to preserve and maintain its entity and identity. It should shed off its unnecessary phobia and stop shaking like a dry leaf at the slightest wind blowing. Thanks to the uninvited intrusion of RSS into Sikhism with their remarks in their organ 'The Organiser' that the sacred texts of the Sikhs are "known for their salutations to Sri Rama" which has helped to complicate matter further by . Perhaps they believe that if you want to convince a man, first confuse him. Islam, Christianity and Judaism despite maintaing their separate identitoes have preserved the names and references of the earlier prophets. Guru Granth Sahib likewise has respectfully canonised the names of the mythological gods, goddesses etc. saying that all these are ever singing the praise of the Lord at His doorsteps. Gurmat is unequivocally clear that the only entity to be worshipped is the One who does not take birth and does not come in any form. Gurmat also does not object if Akal Purakh is remembered by the name of Rama, Krishna or likewise. But it certainly will not equate Rama or Krishna as God. The row, thus, whether Guru Granth Sahib has refernces to Rama or not, is nothing but unnecessary. It goes to the credit of the unflinching faith of the Hindus that even pre-historic Rama is preserved and worshipped as if he were present even now. They are trying not only to preserve anything linked with him but have been successful in making his birth-place, an officially documented site. On one side there are communities which are endeavouring to even convert the mythology into government documented history. On the other there are so called scholars in Sikhism, whose only "mission" seems is to convert just five hundred year old history into mythology. All their energies are directed toward one goal. Create doubts about Sikh hisotry, historical events, old granths, places linked with the Gurus and Sikh history. This danger is much more than even from RSS or likes. For the Sikh values, the teachings, banee of Guru Granth Sahib and Dasam Granth is there to protect the identity and entity of the Sikhs. If there is real danger to the community, it is from these neo-atheists guised as gumat parcharks armed with half-cooked knowledge who and are on charge to create doubts about the Gurus, their life and their banee. The issue whether Rama is a mythological, historical or a fictional figure has divided North and South and even the Hindu scholars. The genesis of this traditional animosity is not difficult to find. Even Dayanand has given the boundaries of Aryavrta (Bharat Varsh) as extending from the Himalayas to Vindhyanchal (Madhya Pradesh). According to the RSS journal, Ram Setu was built by Lord Rama's vanar sena 17,50,000 years ago. The Ramayana of Tulsi is about four hundred and fifty years old and that of Valmiki dates back to 500 B.C to 100 B.C. Obviously the epic Ramayana is a creation lakhs of years later than the life and time of legendary Rama. The existence of Ramayana is thus because of Rama and his stories, legends, folk tales etc. There are numerous Ramayanas and they are not confined to India but have different versions in the neighbouring countries also. Almost all regions of India have also given their version of Ramayana. Even Guru Gobind Singh ji had given his own Ramavtar. The daily prayers, nitnem is taken from this epic penned by Guru Gobind Singh ji. The world has the tradion of labelling some as devils or demons and some as angels. The same was followed in India too. But here Guru Gobind Singh ji came with an abundently clear concept that both devils and are caught in the web of womb and come to world to fulfil that cycle. Interstingly he even referred to the prevailing situation of that time in these verses: 104 ॥ ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ -ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੋ ਪਾਖਯਾਨ) As there is a species of demons, similarly there is a specie of gods. The way the Turks are riding roughshod on the head of the Hindus, kal (death) is hovering over every one. At times demons killed devtas and some time the devtas were able to kill rakhshas (demons). But the one who eliminates both devtas as well as rakshas is my protector. Basically it is the character or qualities of a person which make him good or bad. Ravana was otherwise Brahmin. Jha, a friend of mine gave a very intersting remaks that only a Brahmin can become Ravana. Clarifying this point in his biography Bachittar Natak, the wondrous drama, Guru Gobind Singh ji goes on to say: 15॥ ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ-ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ) The man whoperforms pious deeds ears the appelation of a "god" and the one who does evil in the world is universally called a demon. Guru Gobind Singh ji goes on to say ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ‐ ਅਕਾਲ ਉਸਤਤਿ ) As one Shiva goes another comes. Similarily Rama and Krishna too have a sequence of repeated incarnations. Guru Granth Sahib says that these incarnations of Vishnu were in fact the kings of their time but later people started worshipping them as Avtars and gods. 7 ॥ (ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ , 424) Rama as a king did expand his kingdom and ruled the people with four canons of politics, sam, dam, dand and sabheda. He also religiously followed and upheld the Vedic rules of the caste system. 838॥ (ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ‐ ਰਾਮਾਵਤਾਰ) Rama as a king did enjoy and suffer normal human pleasures and predicaments. 3 ॥ (ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ , 875 ) Despite this, Rama as a symbol has been adapted by Gurmat. Guru Granth Sahib says that Rama, Krishna etc. ruled the people in their times but now in the kaliyuga it is Guru Nanak, who is relevant. (ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ , 1390) Even Guru Nanak Dev Ji while referring to the building of a bridge and killing of Ravana has addressed Rama as a gurmukh. ( ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, 543) While Guru Granth Sahib mentions Rama as a gurmukh, Ravana has been referred as a moorakh. Often a point is raised that Guru Gobind Singh ji has linked his lineage with the Raghu Kul, the clan of Raghu, the grand father of Rama. The clans are reality but their lineage and starting point is illusionary and uncertain to prove. However, every person belongs to one or other clan. Now Guru Gobind Singh ji has said it very clearly that he was from the clan of Sodhis, which finds its roots in the Raghukul. This very point is mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib also. 2 ॥ ( ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, 1401) Despite this, Guru Gobind Singh ji has not given any weightage to his worldly clan. Rather when creating the Khalsa he said that now Khalsa belongs to the clan of khanda, the double edged sword. In the words of Dr. Gokal Chand Narang, the famous historian, Rama and Krishna had received the homage of everyone as Divine beings. It was Nanak who boldly questioned their divinity and brought them down to the level of mortals…………… Guru Gobind Singh went further and stated: 'He created millions of worms like Krishna, made many Ramas and destroyed them. Many Mohammads came into the world . All died when their time expired. [Gokal Chand Narang Transformation of Sikhism.p.384] ਕਿਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਸੇ ਕੀਟ ਕੋਟੈ ਬਨਾਏ ॥ 28॥ ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ‐- ਅਕਾਲ ਉਸਤਤਿ) According to the chronology given by Hindu tradition and scholars, Vishnu took seventh incarnation in the form of Rama in Treta yug. Dhruv and Prahlad the two child Bhagats came in Satyug, i.e. millions of years before Rama, the king of Ayodhya. Guru Granth Sahib is the propagator of strict monotheism. It cannot worship anything or anybody except the Nirankar who is formless, omnipresent and does not take birth or incarnations. So the call of Guru Granth Sahib to everyone is very clear, to mediatate on the name of the Lord as vigorously and as devotedly as was done by Dhruv and Prahlad. 1॥( 336) At this time there was no existence of King Rama of Ayodhya. 190 ॥ (gurU gRMQ swihb, 1374 ) Kabeer, it does make a difference, how you chant the Lord's Name, 'Raam'. This is something to consider. Everyone uses the same word for the son of Dasrath and for the Wondrous Lord. 191 ॥ (gurU gRMQ swihb, 1375) Kabeer, use the word 'Raam', only to speak of the All-pervading Lord. You must make that distinction. One 'Raam' is pervading everywhere, while the other is contained only in himself. ||191|| The divide of North and South over the status of Rama and Ravana is all too visible. Whereas in the North Rama is revered, the same status is not conferred on him in the South. Though Guru Gobind Singh ji in his ' Ramavtar' has critically analysed at length the epic of Rama and Ravana, but he has also given a very interesting note at the end about the spiritual status of Rama and Ravana 862॥ ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ‐ ਰਾਮਾਵਤਾਰ) It isdifficult to decide as to who was a saint and who was not; it is a contentious issue. My job was to complete this epic with the grace of God – which I have done. The Ramavtar ends with the cantos which form part of the daily prayer of the Sikhs and declare unequivocally that after I have come to the feet of the Lord I will not even look to any one else. Rama, Rahim, Puranas, Quran all give different versions of God, but I shall heed none. 863 ॥ ( ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ‐ ਰਾਮਾਵਤਾਰ) Gurcharanjit Singh Lamba Editor Sant Sipahi (Estd.1945) editor@santsipahi.org, lambags@gmail.com,
  15. Ji, I don't like posting on this forum (or any other) to be honest with you because (for me) it causes a lot of dubda. But this is a benti, everyong talks about how other people 'diss' sikhi and that may be true, but there is no need for us to 'diss' any other religion. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent his whole lifetime with such people and also validated Mohammed (whatever he may have done). Don't get me wrong, I'm not the greatest fan of Islam (or the modern type anyway) either. When you make comments like that it proves that you don't seem to understand what Guru Nanak Dev Ji stood for. As for contradictions, I think you really have to know the context in which the quotes were written in. But at times I think Guru Granth Sahib Ji is such that he/she gives the knowledge about the consequence to every action and it's up to us to consider whether it's right or wrong to do certain things. He/she gives us the freedom to choose whether or not to take on certain responsibilites of your own actions. I despise people who use quotes from Maharaaj for their own purpose of manipulating people when really nobody can show you your way to Maharaaj but yourself. Phul Chuk Maaf (I'm still learning) :WW: Satnam

There is no such things as a test. Has anyone ever thought.. why would Maharaaj want to test us? He/she probably already knows what we're going to do or the choices we are going to make. Maharaaj doesn't test us. These challenges are there for us, to let us grow. Without these challenges, how can we empathise or help anyone else or even ourselves? Only by completing exams in schools can we progress to the next level. Without the exams, we would not be able to progress and be competent enough to progress. As you grow spiritually, you will meet greater challenges.. the best thing you can do is shrug your shoulders and know that all bad things... aswell as good things come to an end. Satnam

  19. Great! so which rehat maryada is this? Please let me know. What I want to know, for all those out there who think that only men should be Punj Pyarey, if it really is a male/female thing.. Mata Sahib Kaur put the patasey into the Amrit, so how come in every Amrit Sanchar you don't have a woman putting the patasey into the Amrit??? I think the most beautiful thing to see is a graceful powerful Sikh woman being one of the Punj Pyarey. If you say that it should be only men because you have to 'replicate' what happened in 1699, then why not get guys of the same caste as those of the original Punj Pyarey? Guru Gobind Singh Ji did not say I want the heads of 5 Sikh men.. he said he wanted the heads of 5 Sikhs. In Sri Guru Granth Shib Ji, we are portrayed as 'brides'. So who is male or female? In our past reincarnations, God knows what we have been... both male and female. So who is to say who is compatible or not. I don't think you are/not elgible to be in the Punj Pyarey just because you have half a chromosome more or less than the opposite sex. Please, my Guru is more open minded than this... Don't insult them. Satnam Harsimrren Kaur
