  1. But it's quite easy to find information about the university rankings (though it's tougher to find information about the reputation of different departments, but eg. guardian.co.uk has rankings for that too). And universities have all the projects and professors listed on their websites. So there's no special need for that.
  2. Wonderful idea I'm planning to move to UK next year for studies, and i've struggled to find info about the nearest Gurdwara sahib etc. The main reason i want to come to UK is the sangat, so this would be a great help. Do you already have an idea when this guide will be published? Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, vaheguru ji ki fateh!
  3. Stop dissing feminists.. without the feminist movement, women wouldn't even have the right to vote or study in universities! And there's still a lot to do, it seems.
  4. the situation seems to be the same as in Tibet.. the chinese government wants to suppress all minorities. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Turkesta...dence_movement:
  5. Amazing stuff! here's another good one.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAoUNunZ9CQ i love it when he just suddenly goes.. naanak dukhiaa sabh sansaar!
  6. women have actually 11 doors instead of 10 (not that it makes any difference though..)
  7. I have always been wondering if trees and plants have souls... so there was an answer for that question too it's really interesting though that there are souls in mountains too.. i wonder if they can feel anything. i read an introduction to the tibetan book of the dead some time ago, where it said that a person who meditates a lot may end up in a passive state of trance instead of enlightment.. and then he will be born as some sort of conscious interstellar cloud.. that can last for probably millions or billions of years.
  8. I completely agree that all sikhs should know Gurmukhi and be able to read Gurbani. (btw i can read Gurmukhi, i just don't know so much spoken punjabi because i have rather put the effort to learn the language used in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji) Anyway, what i meant was that not all sikhs can be expected to speak punjabi, especially those who aren't from punjabi families. And it's unfair if everything at Gurdwaras happens in punjabi only.
  9. i converted to islam too when i was a teenager (though i wouldn't have if i had known about sikhi then). i've noticed that islam is getting more popular among european people too, i see white women who are wearing islamic clothes almost everyday.. a few times even white men with beard and cap and all. i don't think there's generally anything wrong with it, since it's usually their own personal choice.. and in a way i respect them, because it's not easy to be a muslim (i faced more "terrorist" comments wearing hijab than i have while wearing keski, even though people stare slightly more now, but that's different too.. they are just curious). though this particular case does sound a bit like brainwashing to me.. "mature 11-year-old".. but at least muslims are doing something to inform people about God and religion..
  10. I went to argue with them today, but it was useless. Even with the good ideas you gave, Matheen Singh ji and Inder Singh ji.. they just kept telling the same stuff over and over again. There are people who are boycotting the place, but it's not enough right now, since there are still quite many people who attend. And most of them seem to buy it. But at least i'm confirmed now that i won't go there anymore. After i became a sikh, i lived nearly two years without knowing whether there was a Gurdwara in Finland and i didn't know where i could contact any sikhs here. I was sad about it but i often used to think that that the door to Guru Sahib is inside our hearts really and it doesnt matter where one is.. i guess i have to return to that thought again.. Vaheguru.. (though i hope He gives me the chance to move somewhere else soon... i'm completely lost without the support of my gursikh sisters and brothers..)
  11. Umm.. i had never thought that legs should be covered just because they aren't shaved, i mean people don't cover their arms or faces either. I think the inappropriateness comes from showing the legs, not the hair on the legs. Thanks for the link to the sari discussion.. seems interesting.. will read it through later.
  12. Ok, first of all, don't take this thread too seriously.. I'm just wondering if Kaurs can wear skirts (i don't mean miniskirts but something of an appropriate length) or dresses. The only times i've seen sikh women wearing skirt (or lengha or whatever) is in some wedding pictures. Is there some unspoken rule that prohibits wearing skirts? And that we should only wear pants? Would wearing a skirt be seen as something un-sikh? Is there some history behind it? I was thinking that it might partly be because Kaurs are supposed to be warriors and it would be difficult to fight and ride a horse in a skirt. I've also heard at least sarees being clearly condemned because it's a hindu dress. Anyway, looking forward to answers. Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh!
  13. Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh! Not even a single Gurdwara i've visited has had katha or announcements in english or whatever the local language happens to be. Shouldn't there be someone who would translate it to the people who don't know punjabi? It would be important for both sikhs of other than punjabi backround and sikhs who've been born into punjabi families but haven't learned enough punjabi to understand everything. It would also make non-punjabi people feel much more welcome to the sikh community. Based on what i've read the 3ho seem to be doing good job with all this, but it should also happen in the punjabi run Gurdwaras. Personally, i think it's frustrating to sit and listen with glimpses of understanding a word here and there, with good luck even some short phrase, but still deprived of the message the speaker is trying to get across, while knowing it might very well be something interesting and important. Especially when the solution would be simply to have someone doing the seva of translating it for the sangat. It must be already happening at many Gurdwaras, but i've never witnessed it, so i thought it would be important to bring up this topic. It should be every person's right in the sangat to get the knowledge of what is being said. Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh!
  14. MJ was a true rebel! his songs have a message for all of us
  15. A lot of the sangat seem to be more or less ok with it. There are people who haven't been coming to the Gurdwara for some time, so there's probably some sort of boycotting going on. Anyway, at the moment it's unlikely that they would return to the original ardaas because of pressure from sangat. I'm not sure what i should personally do. First i stopped going to the Gurdwara but it felt a bit stupid since it won't change anything in the current situation, and Guru Sahib is still there, after all.. And i've tried to protest it during ardaas, which at least last time was noticed by some. I'm becoming more aware that i haven't taken this as seriously as i should have.. partly because it seemed useless to start a dispute with people who clearly aren't being very rational.. and maybe i hoped that they would realize sooner or later how stupid it is to go against the rest of the panth and that they are the only ones upto something like this. But it's not right just to stand aside and look.. Especially because it's not just ardaas, but everything our beloved father Guru Gobind Singh jee ever wrote. And disrespect towards him means disrespect also towards all the other Gurus and Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee and the whole Khalsa panth. Maybe i should gather some courage this week and go and talk to the people responsible for this. Does someone here know any good articles available online about the authenticity of Dasam Granth or something else that might help? I could print out some and take them to the Gurdwara. Seriously.. Some big Nihang Singh should come here, then the itty bitty kitty committee could tell him what they think about Dasam Granth Sahib since they are so brave. Problem solved.
  16. It's still continuing. If the SGPC people and others have really looked into the matter, they haven't got anything successful done about it so far.
  17. Thanks for posting about this veerji and sorry for doubting it, it was just so hard to imagine it (i've been mostly away from here for some time, so i must have missed it when the decision took place).. i would have been quite shocked today if i hadn't known about it, or maybe i wouldn't have realized it at all. They were just telling that they have evidence and whatnot, like it was some scientific discovery.. as if they had no love for the ardaas and banis of Guru Gobind Singh ji.. how else could they do it. I'm not sure but there were less people at the Gurdwara than usually, so maybe some of the sangat is already boycotting it. I will try to follow your advice though. It just makes me sad.. there's so little sangat here anyway, and if they are going to get divided over this now. Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh!
  18. Ok, the news is true. The person doing the Ardaas recited it like that today. What's even worse is that i found out that it's about Dasam Granth Sahib, not just Ardaas. A person from the committee explained to me that some people have done research about it in the recent years and found out that whole Dasam Granth is copied from Hindu scriptures etc etc and that we should only read Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. I asked about Jaap Sahib and other banis. They said that they shouldn't be read either. None of the people there seemed to disagree with it! They said there was someone from India here lately who told them about this, and for some reason they are all convinced about it now. It seemed a bit hopeless.. but any suggestions what i could do??
  19. I'm from Finland and i was surprised to read this. As far as i know there's only one Gurdwara sahib in Finland and at least last sunday they were still saying the ardaas normally.. so this seems weird.. i hope it's not true.
