They were probably equally as likely to be of Tharkhaan background . Tharkhaans are not only skilled artisans but many I have known play dhol and wear patka with trimmed dhari. Many Tharkhaans have been active in the UK Panjabi music scene, don’t forget that !

Starmer urges PM to request India release UK citizen Jagtar Singh Johal

In a letter, the Labour leader asks why Johnson has not acted to ask for the release of Jagtar Singh Johal given the findings of the UN report on arbitrary detention last month.
Johnson prides himself on his strong relations with the Indian government led by Narendra Modi, but he has not used his influence to make a public call for release.
Starmer writes: “Jagtar was arrested in 2017 after travelling to India for his wedding where he was tortured by police officers into making a so-called ‘confession’ to charges carrying the death penalty.”
Referencing the UN working group on arbitrary detention’s conclusion that Jagtar “was targeted because of his activities as a Sikh practitioner and supporter and because of his activism”, he points out that the UN believes there is no legal basis for his continued detention.

Starmer, a former director of public prosecutions, is the most high-profile politician to take up the case, and his intervention suggests the UK will not be able to keep the issue confined to behind-the-scenes diplomacy indefinitely. Johal’s family, based in Dumbarton, have received support from the Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, and the campaign organisation Reprieve.
Starmer in his letter also calls for a cross-party approach to secure his release, saying: “In past cases of British nationals detained abroad it has been crucial to work cross-party, not only to exert maximum pressure but also ensure a coordinated approach. So, in that spirit, I want to offer Labour’s support in securing Jagtar’s release and hope you can address the questions Jagtar’s family desperately want to be answered.”

Pride month: Kuwait criticises US embassy over pro-LGBT tweets

Kuwait has summoned a top US diplomat in protest over tweets from the American embassy supporting LGBT rights, its foreign ministry says.
US officials there had posted a rainbow flag and message of solidarity from President Joe Biden for Pride month.
But Kuwait officials criticised the embassy for "supporting homosexuality" and demanded it didn't happen again.
Rights for LGBT people are severely restricted in Kuwait and it is illegal there for men to be gay.
In a pair of tweets published in English and Arabic on Thursday, the US Embassy in Kuwait quoted President Biden as saying all humans "should be able to live without fear no matter who they are or whom they love".
The post, published to mark the beginning of Pride Month, appeared with a picture of a rainbow flag symbolising LGBT rights.

Bishnoi (also known as Vishnoi) is a Hindu community found in the Western Thar Desert and northern states of India. They follow a set of 29 principles/commandments given by Guru Jambheshwar (also known as Guru Jambhoji, Guru Jambha Ji) (1451-1536).[1] They are a sub-sect of the Vaishnav Sampraday.[2] As of 2019, there are an estimated 10,00,000 followers of Bishnoi Panth residing in north and central India.[3] Shree Guru Jambheshwar founded the sect at Samrathal Dhora in 1485 and his teachings, comprising 120 shabads, are known as Shabadwani. A 'monstrous' predator paid off a taxi driver in order to sexually assault an unconscious teenager in the back of his cab. Omed Mahmood, 39, preyed on the 18-year-old victim after leaving a nightclub in Warrington in the early hours of the morning in October last year.
He approached the woman and walked with her to a nearby taxi rank. CCTV footage taken at about 5am then showed Mahmood, from Atherton near Wigan, pull the woman towards a taxi as she tried to walk away.
The taxi was being driven by Jojo Joseph Thirunilam and was initially bound for Liverpool. However, once the victim had fallen asleep, Mahmood signalled to the driver to turn the vehicle around.
He could be seen handing a number of bank notes to the driver before the taxi headed towards Mahmood’s home address. During the hour-long journey, the victim was repeatedly sexually assaulted while unconscious.
Thirunilam, 49, watched from the front and made licking gestures with his tongue. There was no previous association between Mahmood and Thirunilam before the incident and they were not known to one another.
When the taxi arrived at Mahmood’s home shortly after 6am, he forcefully pulled the victim from the vehicle. Once inside his flat, he sexually assaulted her while she was in and out of consciousness.
The victim left the flat in a 'distressed state' almost two hours later while Mahmood was sleeping. Police were called after she raised the alarm at nearby shop.
Mahmood, of Brooklands Avenue, Atherton, pleaded guilty to attempted rape and four counts of sexual assault in the taxi. Following a trial earlier this year, he was convicted of attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault in connection to the offences in his address.
At Bolton Crown Court today (Tuesday), a judge sentenced Mahmood to nine years in prison. Thirunilam, of Cronulla Drive, Warrington, pleaded guilty to two counts of aiding Mahmood to commit the sexual offences earlier this year.
He was jailed for 18 months and made to sign the Sexual Offender Register. His taxi licence has also been suspended.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Devine, from Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan CID, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victim and her family who have understandably been through a horrific time, especially during the trial where explicit details were heard.
“Detectives immediately launched an investigation and arrested Mahmood within 48 hours of the incident. They carefully pieced together hours off CCTV to understand the events of that night.

A ticket inspector lured the mum-of-two from her economy class seat by offering her a prime air-conditioned compartment during the 500 mile journey between Multan and the country's largest city, Karachi.
Once inside, the checker and three other men took turns to attack her before threatening her if she tried to escape.
The Railways Police chief Faisal Shahkar confirmed the shocking assault happened on the Bahauddin Zakaria Express train last week.
According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, each of the suspects fled to "far-flung areas of Punjab" in the hours after in the hopes of escaping arrest.
But cops caught up with them, arresting two men on Monday with a third arrested the following day, the official added.
The incident has sparked outrage in the ultra-conservative South Asian country, with the public calling for the men to be hanged.One man told state broadcaster Geo: "I wish to see those behind this cruel act hanged by their throats."

An anti-rape law passed last year allows courts to order the chemical castration of offenders - but this doesn't seem to have deterred attacks.
Lawmakers have also approved legislation that will allow for quicker convictions through the establishment of special courts, which will fast-track sexual assault cases.
Chemical castration involves the use of medication to reduce testosterone and is typically used to lower libido and sexual activity or alternatively to treat cancer.
It has been used for paedophiles in Indonesia since 2016 and child rapists in Poland since 2006.

Seven decades on, the couple, who live in Evington, Leicester, celebrated their platinum anniversary alongside friends and family at the Sikh temple in East Park Road.Ajmer, 86, and 84-year-old Surinder received a card of congratulations from both Her Majesty the Queen , and the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor George Cole. As the couple celebrated their platinum, they sat down with LeicestershireLive to tell their story and share their secrets to having a long-lasting relationship.
In 1952, Ajmer and Surinder had a traditional Hindu ceremony to consolidate their marriage, despite Ajmer being a Sikh. Ajmer said: “We didn’t even see each other before we got married, back in those days the first time you’d meet your spouse was at the actual wedding.
“We opted for a Hindu ceremony, because my wife came from a Hindu village, but she has adopted the Sikh religion since then. During the ceremony everyone sits around the fire chanting mantras and giving offerings.
“The husband usually leads the way, as the couple has to walk around the fire seven times. Towards the end the wife leads the way.”
The couple were only teenagers when their marriage was arranged, and they had to spend two years apart despite being married, due to the fact that Surinder was only 14. The couple said: “Both marrying young and arranged marriages were very normal at the time so we didn’t think much of it.
“In our culture we don’t ever question our parents or the decisions they made. Ultimately we were more than happy to get married because we knew it was what our parents and culture expected of us.”

Sign upFollowing the outstanding success of the Platinum Jubilee Dinner organised by the Yorkshire Sikh Forum (YSF), which heralded the start of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Yorkshire, one of the leading lights in the YSF, who was instrumental in organising the dinner, Iqbal Sekhon, more popularly known as Simmy Sekhon, described the dinner as “joyous”, and was full of praise for those who had organised the celebration, working to a tight, two-month deadline.
Simmy, CEO of the Sekhon Group, said: “The dinner was a great success, much enjoyed by all our dignitaries, and we realised how important it was to have this event as a reminder of modern day, multi-cultural Britain.
“The day was so joyous.”
“But I must also make a special mention on behalf of Ray Brown of the Sekhon Group and Rehana Akbar and Peter Davis of Oikos Family Residential Centres, who were instrumental in the planning and organising of the dinner, which they did in such a short space of time.”
Mr Sekhon also extended his gratitude to Dr Manoj Joshi for his contribution to organising the dinner and for giving the vote of thanks, and also the Indian High Commission for over 30 years of support extended to Yorkshire’s Sikh community.
The Platinum Jubilee Dinner took place on May 15 at Leeds Civic Hall, and among the dignitaries attending the event were the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Ed Anderson, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Asghar Khan, leader of Bradford council Susan Hinchcliffe and High Sheriff of West Yorkshire, Susan Baker MBE.
There were two hundred leading members of Yorkshire’s business community present to enjoy the warm welcome as a bag pipes procession led the dignitaries into the banqueting hall, where they were greeted by a 96-beat drum roll and an outstanding performance of bhangra music and dance from members of Bradford’s Punjabi Roots Academy.
Simmy Sekhon said: “I was particularly pleased when Balbir Singh DL requested the YSF to link the Queens Jubilee celebrations to the YSF annual Vaisakhi celebrations and would like to acknowledge and thank our chief guest Lord Lieutenant Ed Anderson for being in attendance.”
The Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire was delighted to be representing Her Majesty at such a prestigious event.
He said: “I am delighted to extend my greetings for the festival and to share in these celebrations with you.
“We are indeed blessed to have had the Queen serve this country for over 70 years.
“It is worth remembering that famous pledge that she gave all those years ago - ‘I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service’ – Those really are remarkable words, and my goodness, Her Majesty has certainly lived up to that pledge.”
There was a warm welcome from the general secretary of the Yorkshire Sikh Forum, Mr Hardev Singh Sidhu, who greeted the guests, saying: “I am delighted to see so many here today for our joint celebration of the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi and the Platinum Jubilee.
“For Sikhs, Vaisakhi is the most important celebration in our calendar.”
While the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Asghar Khan, reflected on the difficulties of the past two years, his message was upbeat: “Isn’t it wonderful that we are all now back together, in person and enjoying these celebrations.”
Everybody in the hall heartly agreed.
The Yorkshire Sikh Forum is a not-for-profit organisation and all the work undertaken by the members is purely voluntary and self-funded and sponsorships raised, and it was thanks to the generosity of a total of 23 sponsors which enabled the Platinum Jubilee/Vaisakhi dinner to take place

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wants to freeze the sale, importation and transfer of handguns in Canada, he told reporters today.
The big picture: This isn't a full ban, but it will significantly restrict the number of handguns in circulation, CBC reports.
- "In other words, we're capping the market for handguns," he said at a press conference.
- "Other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives."
Between the lines: Canada has stricter gun laws than the U.S., and it does not guarantee a constitutional right to bear arms.
New rules were proposed in Canada's Parliament today that include, CBC reports:
- Limits on the size of magazines
- Harsher criminal penalties for trafficking guns
- A "red flag" gun control law
- Stripping firearm licenses from people involved with domestic violence
Flashback: Trudeau introduced rules banning the AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles in 2020, after a mass shooting spree in Nova Scotia.
- In March of 2022, Canada said it would add another year to an "amnesty" period while officials set up mandatory buyback programs, CBC reports.

Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jawaharke village of Mansa district on Sunday, May 29.
This follows just a day after Punjab Police withdrew security of 424 people, including of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
Sidhu Moosewala had contested the Punjab assembly election on a Congress ticket from Mansa and was defeated by the AAP candidate Vijay Singla by a huge margin of 63,000 votes. Vijay Singla was recently sacked by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann over charges of corruption.
Last month, Sidhu Moosewala had sparked a row after he targeted the Aam Aadmi Party and its supporters in his latest song ‘Scapegoat’. The singer had allegedly called AAP supporters ‘gaddar’ (traitor) in his song.

Lahore Museum sets up Sikh Gallery
LAHORE: Lahore Museum has established a new gallery titled ‘Sikh Gallery’ to preserve and display rare artifacts, paintings, manuscripts, furniture etc. related to Sikhism and Sikh era.
Previously a small number of items were displayed in the museum’s general gallery, but now a separate gallery has been dedicated to exhibit antiques belonging to Sikh period and religion, the museum’s Director Ejaz Ahmed Minhas told Dawn.
He says the monotheistic Sikh religion gives the message of unity, truthfulness and brotherhood.
He says most of the Sikh collection in Lahore Museum is associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh who established the Sikh empire in the sub-continent in 1799 when he captured Lahore and ruled till 1849. He was popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab (The lion of Punjab).
Sikh collection in Lahore Museum includes miniature paintings, manuscripts, handwritten Guru Granth Sahib, official documents of royal darbar, royal orders, dresses, weapons and exquisite furniture, including the magnificent chair of Moran Sarkar and a royal chair which has two lions statues on it, from the Mahraja’s court.
The director says that the oil paintings of Sikh royals are of great significance, adding that most of this collection is donated by the Faqeer Syed Jalal-ud-Din Trust of the Faqeer family.
Mr Minhas says the collection also includes the Maharaja’s personal belongings, including his prayer beads, a large axe and Maharani Jinda’s shawl. The orders of Maharaja are also of great interest as they show his administrative system that was based on justice, he adds. He says the information about the Sikh Gurus is of special interest for foreign tourists and researchers, adding that visiting Sikhs also perform their religious rituals in the gallery. He says the weaponry of Maharaja’s era is also on display in the Sikh Gallery, including rare swords with handles made of sold gold and kirpans etc.
Mr Minhas said some of the items which were lying in the museum’s store are being displayed for the first time in the new gallery, including ivory furniture, an old map of Lahore, a portrait of Mahraja Dulip Singh and a rare Golden Temple model. The director says that the new gallery is also a gesture to promote interfaith harmony, religious tourism and a soft image of Pakistan in the world.
