  8. A Christian football club has folded in shame after players allegedly sang Chelsea thugs’ notorious fascist chant “We’re racist and that’s the way we like it” in earshot of a black referee. Sickened top brass at Pye Green Towers FC disbanded the West Midlands Christian League outfit after their match with Selly Oak Methodists. The team was originally spawned out of Pye Green Christian Centre, on the fringes of Cannock Chase, but severed ties some years ago, a spokesman for the charity said. The soccer outfit is still advertised on the centre website. The Sunday Mercury – a newspaper that has won awards for its long-standing Respect The Ref campaign – has been told the changing room chant took place while the ref prepared for kick-off next door. He was so shaken by the vile verse that a league official was called to provide support during the game at Erasmus Darwin Academy, Burntwood, Staffordshire. The Methodists won the division two clash 3-1, but the result has been declared void. Last month, Chelsea fans were filmed in Paris, where their team were playing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, bellowing the same song. They spat out the words while stopping a black man from boarding a busy Metro train. Birmingham County FA last night confirmed the shocking accusation, which flies in the face of the Bible-bashing league’s mission statement. The league was created “to enable Christian and non-Christian men alike to participate in a capably organised league in a manner, both on and off the field of play, that is morally, decently and ethically sound of action and speech and is honouring to the name of Jesus Christ”. FA discipline boss Mike Fellows has publicly praised Towers’ mortified captain, who apologised profusely to the ref before kick off. Despite the decision to bin the shamed club, individuals will still face the music if Towers are found guilty of failing to control players. The fine that the club should have paid will be divided up among individual officials and players. On its website, the Christian League makes no reference to the incident itself. Officials state online only that “following discussions between the League and Pye Green Towers, we can confirm that they have left the League with immediate effect. "All League records will be expunged for this season regarding Division 2 matches that they played in. Fixtures and league tables have already been adjusted accordingly.” League secretary Neil Kovacs confirmed to the Sunday Mercury that the team is no more. “I spoke to the club and they did agree that it was not acceptable,” he said. “From a Christian point of view, it has no place in football and no place in society. “We both agreed that the club’s position in the league was untenable. They immediately folded the club. They made that decision,” Mr Kovacs declined to go into detail about the incident, but admitted: “Something did happen on the day which is now the subject of Birmingham County FA disciplinary procedure.” Not all of the Towers players were involved, Mr Kovacs stressed. In fact, there may be only one individual at the centre of the FA’s probe. “The referee did go into the dressing room and say it was not acceptable,” he added. “He has thanked the league for the support offered on the day and the support that followed. He is staying with us.” Mr Kovacs added that such incidents were extremely rare in a league set up 36 years ago so Christian amateur footballers did not have to play on the Sabbath. “We are honest and straightforward,” he said. “It is a shame that the good work – we have raised £14,000 in 10 years for charity – doesn’t get reported, but this does.” A Towers supporter, who asked not to be named, said the controversy had been blown out of all proportion. “As I understand it, a player was trying to explain what he’d seen on YouTube,” he said. Dave Spencer, of Pye Green Christian Centre, said his organisation has had no involvement with the football club for a number of years. He said: “Historically, there was some involvement, but not now. There is no one from here who plays for the team or runs it.” But the place of worship’s website still proclaims: 10.30 KO - church team Pye Green Towers Football Club play in the West Midlands Christian Football League.” That’s one match that will not now be taking place. “The website simply needs to be updated,” explained Mr Spencer. WHAT THE FA SAYS... Birmingham County FA boss Mike Fellows yesterday confirmed the allegation against Pye Green Towers which has resulted in the club being charged with failing to control players. If a panel decides there was an aggravated feature to the incident, any fine imposed could be dramatically cranked up. And Mr Fellows issued a stern warning to park football teams. “Incidents such as the one alleged here,” he told the Sunday Mercury, “will not be tolerated, they will not be tolerated at all. “They have no place in the game or our society. We have witnessed a rise in race and gender-related complaints. That does not mean more are taking place, it means individuals have more confidence in the way we tackle the issue and are coming forward. “We will continue to prove that confidence is justified by hitting culprits hard, very hard indeed.” http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/christian-football-team-axed-over-8795488
