Watched it with housemates. Definitely thought the kid was too arrogant for his own good. His ego will be his downfall if he is not careful. He wants to go into research but he doesn't understand the practicalities of everyday life in the lab. I've been working in the lab in the past year. Sometimes the results come out right, sometimes they don't and you have to repeat. Sometimes the approach to the experiment was wrong. Once the kid starts life in the lab, he'll know the restrictions of the lab, apparatus and the limited knowledge of the subject.

I think you're allowed to deal with them ie speak to them etc but don't think you're meant to be in constant company of them. If we weren't allowed to speal to atheists, then I'd have a major problem because I'm training to be a doctor, so need to deal with people of all faiths, including that of non-faith.

Just read some stuff from SSNEWS section. 1. Increase quota of (cheaper) liquor to be allowed. 2. LEGAL and widespread sale of CANNABIS!!! Is it me or is someone trying to intoxicate everyone deliberately? I feel like it's a deliberate plan. If Sikhs are all intoxicated, they'll say/do anything. I'm worried.

Wow that last one's a lot different to the story I heard: Baba Budda Ji was a child. Guru Nanak was having a discussion with some people. Baba Budda Ji came and listened. They (not sure who) said, "why are you here? You are a child. you should be playing like other children?". Baba Budda Ji replied something along the lines of "I watched a fire burning and I noticed that the little twigs burned more quickly than the bigger ones". Either way, he was given that name for the insight and wisdom of an old person, though he was just a child.

I'm not an Amritdhari but still feel I need to ask this. When can I do paath after washing hair + body? Do I need to wait for my hair to dry (2-3hrs if I let my hair down over my back) first? Can't use a hair dryer because it causes my hair to break. VJKKVJKF

This is something along the lines of what I remember: There was a Sikh that came to see Guru Gobind Singh and Guru ji gave him a lot of love because he had a very nice long full dharee i.e Darshani Sikh. The same sikh went home that night and saw he had one white hair which he plucked out of his beard. The next he went back to see Guru Ji, and Guru ji would not even talk to him. The Sikh asked you gave me so much love yesterday what about today? He replied yesterday you were my Sikh today you are not.

Why change it? This is to allow bigamy/polygamy. Which is WRONG!!! So this means that Naamdharis are accepted back now? They who rejected The Guru Granth Maharaj as their one and only Guru? <admin-profanity filter activated>?!?! again, this is wrong. I swear there's a story where a Singh plucked a grey hair from his beard and was chastised by Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj for it. I am in such a state of mind that if it were possible, and I was in front of the committee, I would punch all of their lights out. At least until they saw sense :lol:

I started with JapJi Sahib. When I was a teenager, my parents made me read Japji Sahib from a gutka and have a CD in tha background, so I listened with my ears and read with my eyes. I did this this every day without fail (parents always made sure I did). anyhoo, one day, sitting on the bus, I started doing JapJi Sahib without realising it. I got as far as about 9 pauris before I realised what I was doing, and then managed to complete it. Whatever you do, try and listen and read at the same time. It's a lot easier.

Later on in another question "Is the belief of Sikhs that Guru Nanak has had contact with God...." Not sure about the "hindu sant" I always thought that everyone saw him as a saint, except his dad, who tried to make Guru Ji work/get married etc

Woah that was some powerful reading there. Then again, Stings Desert Rose was playing in the background too I have read biography of Baba Harnam Singh Ji, which also dealt with ghosts/evil spirits. Baba Ji, whilst doing paath, drove out the ghosts. I have also heard of a place in (punjab?) India that used to be full od Ghosts. Guru Nanak Dev Maharaj apparently went to that place and drove out many ghosts and evil spirits. anyone know where it is?

Surely the purpose of testing medicines on animals is to look for significant side-effects before then trialing them on humans. Nobody knows the true side-effects of every drug beforehand, nor can it be easily predicted. Thus it is necessary for the development of Western medicines to test on animals. Many vaccines, eg polio, mumps, measles were developed using animal testing. Medication like paracetamol and insulin were also developed in this way. Even things like pacemakers, and artificial hips etc were first tested on animals. Diseases like measles would kill children. Without artificial hips, the elderly would be bed-ridden. Every time someone takes a Western medicine, bear in mind it has been tested on animals to see whether it was safe for humans to take.

Another thing that annoys me regarding this is when people pronounce it as : sat SIRI akal Anybody know the meaning of 'siri'? Is this down to laziness or lack of ability to pronounciate Punjabi correctly?

Whilst I agree with this, I don't think many of us are at that level where we can be injured and NOT feel the pain. I accept the use of bhang IN TIMES OF WAR. Taking it now is of no use nor benefit.

True. South Park often shows the idiocy/hypocrisy of man's actions. One ep that springs to mind is "Good Time With Weapons" which shows how people get in an uproar over a naked kid (basically sex, sex-related things) but don't care about violence. Another shows the stupid results of trying to push sex education to a younger and younger audience (even kindergarten!). The people who need to watch this show are the ones who abhor it even though they'#ve never seen an ep in their life.

Don't worry bout the Soton thing. We're trying to get the Sikh Society established here in Soton. At the mo, it's just starting up and we're trying to sort out future events. You'll hear more in the future.

I've seen the ep, several weeks ago. Firstly, one of the things abuot South Park is that it satirises (right word here?) popular topics. For example, in one episode, it rips on Mormons, making a mockery of the religion. But then in another ep, it says that Mormons are the true path to heaven. Similarly, it's focussing on all of the stories around statues of the Virgin Mary bleeding from her eyes (which I believe happened many months back). So it takes the mick out of it. I'm pretty sure it has ripped on catholics, Jews, and other religions. Yet in another ep, it also depicts leaders of the major religions (Jesus, Moses, Krishna, Lao-Tzu, Bhudda, and Mohammed - yes even he's depicted in the show!). Anyway it shows these leaders who work together to fight evil as Super Best Friends or something. I'm not defending south park, but I Do watch it and do love it for what it is. A show that takes the mick out of everything, thereby negating it's stance on anything.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ke Fateh A long time ago a mate of mine lent me a Gurbani CD to use. On the CD were pics are various Gurdwaras in India, Translations of Nitnem etc. One thing it had was a document that detailed all of the Guru's lives, their actions/incidents and the history of the Panth, the battles fought etc. I'm trying to get ahold of this document (it was in some wierd format, not PDF). Does anyone have it and is able to upload it for me? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ke Fateh

This reminds me of some Gursikhs who, at the weekend, gave English translation and katha in English of a shabad. One story he told was of Guru Nanak Dev Maharaj, who was with Bhai Mardana and another companion (I forget his name). Guru Ji asked them both "How close is death?" The first companion said "I know I saw the sun rise today but I do not know whether I will see it rise tomorrow." Guru Ji replied "That far? That you're guaranteed to see the sun set too?" Then he asked Bhai Mardana. Mardana said "I know I will lift my foot (to walk?) but do not know whether it will touch the ground again." Guru Ji also tolf him he was wrong. "When you breathe in, you will exhale it back out. This much you are guaranteed. Each and every breath may be our last. This is how close Death is." VJKKVJKF Forgive me if I missed something out or made a mistake. This is only what I thought I understood from the katha.

From what I have read and understood from Gurbani, dreams are like a disease too. They are an affliction upon the mind I don't know if you've ever had a lucid dream - I've had quite a few. A lucid dream is one where you know you are dreaming. This allows you to control your actions in a dream. You can run, you can talk to other people etc. Now imagine a dream world where everybody is in a dream and if you talk to someone, they are dreaming that they are talking to you. This all gets a bit Matrix-y but maybe the quotes will help? I don't know about dreams from our heart. A true Brahmgiani never dreams. He never even sleeps. As for darshan of Guru Ji in our dreams. I don't know what this means. I had a dream a few weeks back of a Mahapurash Ji. I didn't recognise him but the sangat who were in the dream knew him and they knew that he had passed away many years ago. ie the Mahapurash came back to life in my dream. Don't know if you can call that Darshan.

Yeah it wasn't difficult to figure out. But what I mean is people will see the words individually and not the sentence as a whole. Putting in spaces made gibberish. It's only if you know where you're MEANT to split the words does it make sense. Yet if the Guru saw no reason to split it up, why did we? It's almost like insulting the Guru: "We found it difficult to read so we made it easier." It's like: "we cut our hair because it was too difficult to comb and look after".
