  1. Thank you Donald Trump for encouraging me to tie a larger dumalla and ucha bunga. I don't know if you knew it was a dastaar or not or if you meant to say that, but I realized that we need to stand out from the other people so that everyone immediately recognizes we are Sikhs . Or they at least figure out that we don't belong to any other religion like Islam if they don't know about Sikhs
  2. In Which Raag is this shabad being performed in? The shabad itself is in Raag Soohee but is it being performed in Raag Basant? And does anyone have notation for this shabad on harmonium? I really want to learn Raag Kirtan. I have been doing kirtan in tunes I made myself for about a year now and I only recently realized the importance of raag. I found the four volumes Gurmat Sangeet Sagar on discoversikhism.com and I'm trying my best to learn from there myself. Currently I am making an effort to learn Basant and Bahar for the spring season from Sangrand of Magh to Holla Mohalla. If anyone could give me another great source for learning gurmat sangeet that would be great.
  3. ^^^ when you reply to a thread thats nine years old
  4. didn't him and his son get jumped outside his store or something? ah yes, this infamous video. brings back memories of all those arguements I've witnessed between AKJ and others And the countless jokes made about this . I've heard some other kids say "Lets go Kaki pind style!" and then they all go "mmwahegur mmwahegur" and make other various sounds to mock them.
  5. Wait, so you think everybody is against the US government just because Obama is black ? There are waaaay more reasons than that (being black isn't one of them). Too many to list. Fast/Furious , Open borders , Obamacare , NSA surveillance state, PATRIOT/FREEDOM Act, militarized police state, war against freedom of speech, Iraq/Syria/Libya/Benghazi (the middle eastern mess), Gitmo torture, the stupid war against drugs, extreme dishonesty, war against self defense - just to name a few i think from myself. Although most goray probably don't like him because they see him as "unpatriotic" , they don't think he respects the constitution and values of the US etc etc. and all the general gora stuff. this may not be related to what we are discussing, but take a look at this video. (its not a video supporting nazis or from any political party or racists btw)
  6. Just a warning - Don't believe everything they say over at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Surrey. Sometimes they go a little bit too far. I respect them but they are pretty extreme at times I really surprised this Gurdwara Sahib is actually on TV and haven't been taken off yet.
  7. Katha should be strictly Gurbani (or other historical puratan writings) related only. Other subjects can be done lecture style somewhere else and where everyone is allowed to ask questions. Or just simply move it to the podium instead.
  8. Freedom of Speech > your feelings (Forgive my rudeness) Too many Sikhs don't understand basic freedom. The Indian mentality of "censor everything" is stuck in their head. Although Youtube is technically a private corporation/service and they can ban whoever they like. Obviously we should give a response, but we shouldn't just scream "OMG THAT HURTS ME FEELINGS TAKE IT DOWN" or call your buddies and go hunt the guy down and kill him allahu akbar style. What kind of image does it give of the Sikhs? https://www.instagram.com/p/-5T_YLgCZR/?taken-by=the_greek_savagery This guy posted a meme of Bhai Dayala Jee. Obviously he didn't know what was going on or who it was in the picture and he used it in a meme making fun his patience and calmness in the boiling cauldron. Eventually, I think he understood and he took it down. The link above is to a post he made right after I understand some people were really hurt seeing a prominent shaheed being mocked, but the response to the picture was a total embarrassment for Sikhs. Someone even openly threatened to kill him and another challenged him to a fight IN BROOKLYN. And then theres this whole "Ban Sikh Jokes" thing going on. Are we really telling a government to arrest, fine, and use force against those who make fun of us? Really? What does that show about us? Sikhs are to be against oppression of rights as ordered by Dasmesh Pita Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj.
  9. I would say start off with encouraging them to always say WAHEGURU JEE KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JEE KI FATEH (gajj ke). Then I think it would be fine to teach them anything else like bowing or touching feet for respect because it is just a cultural thing.
  10. Stop wearing a patka. Tie a dastar (preferably dumala for younger people) and you will look ten times better. Trust me. Your confidence in your self and how you look will increase automatically. I had the same problem when I was a bit younger. I remember I had a lot of facial hair at your age and I thought I looked like some weird hairy beast from another planet while everyone else had smooth faces. Then one day I tied a keski, then a dumala and then I started looking like a real singh. Dastaar will also cover most of your side burns and kesh. Gives a more clean, tidy, and neat look. And all of the other added benefits like head protection. I would mistake some other kids for girls because they had gol dastaars and shiny smooth faces lol. I still have those yearbook pictures. I look like a little hairy patka kid in one, and then a nihang singh in the next. Infact, once you wear a dastar you will start wishing you had more facial hair, because believe me dastaar + flowing beard = really good looking guy. Benefits = you look older and better than your friends and you get to do more stuff and get more respect from other Sikhs . Before you even start learning how to tie it, you just have to be determined to become a dastaar wearing singh and you will figure it out just like that by yourself even.
  11. 2 - Usually Dumala turban material isn't very wide or else it might become harder to tie. Thats why Full Voile and F74 are used because they have a less thread count i think. The dumala would be really thick and fat looking and you wouldnt be able to do proper lars if you use thick or heavy material. It shouldn't be too wide because you will already have a keski/bunga and it will be much more difficult to tie. under Mostly everyone I know just splits the turban , but I think if you get a really small material or if you are making your dumalla really small then maybe keave it double I would say you just split it and make two, if you are tieing a keski under then you must. from experience
  12. LOL @ at everyone struggling to understand him.Im guessing this guys a fellow usa/canada singh. (At least I hope so.) Although I agree with what you have to say, its impossible to make them understand because theyre gonna come at back at you and say you hate women and stuff. I'd rather just tell them to post something meaningful also, something gurmat related or show support for cause of sikh political prisoners. Some will understand , some will continue. And remember we can't force everyone to be the perfect Gursikh but we can try our best and help them out.
  13. I wont go after trump just yet but heres a video for bernie supporters "It doesn't matter if you are an honest politician when your politics are honestly garbage" ( destroyed )
  14. its a really good book i highly recommend it. explains everything from the start
  15. Jagowale Caught Red Handed twisting Gurbani https://www.facebook.com/Jagowale/videos/vb.169545036461534/918197364929627/?type=2&theater
  16. I don't know if this will answer your question or not, but I found this sakhi on the Internet http://tuhitu.blogspot.ca/2006/08/sakhi-series-16-rain-ardas-and-faith.html If I do ardas and whatever I requested didn't happen, then i accept that He didn't let it happen for a reason. Everything is according to His Order Hukam.
  17. Just remember that this most likelymeans attacks on Sikhs will also increase, because of ignorant people. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. Pastor Martin Niemöller (Muslims may or may not be the best people alive, but that doesn't mean we just let them get attacked )
  18. Very Nice, I hope the tourists learned something about Sikhism Looks like a really beautiful place
  19. I'm not saying they are dangerous people I'm saying why we offering to send them to our schools, change the scheduled classes, and speak arabic for them when there are plenty of Muslim schools in the area ? And I don't think it would go very well when you have an all Sikh school and then a different religion maybe they could also get bullied. And I'm pretty sure they have Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj in their schools too. I salute these great Sikhs who are doing this seva , but we also need to think it through a bit. They have good intentions but that doesn't mean there won't be problems And for the refugees we should help them get started and give them the resources they need, but we shouldn't just keep giving them so much for a long time because they also need to work and earn money for themselves.
  20. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/sikh-community-syrian-refugees-1.3330872Khalsa Jee, why do I feel that its not such a great idea to send them to the Khalsa Schools?
  21. I should try to go to my local table/chairs gurdwara sahib and take pictures of the floor seated area to show you the halaat of it.
  22. He is coming to a local gurdwara here where I live next week. I wanna meet him
  23. I don't even think we are capable of leading ourselves yet. We need more educated Gursikhs to become leaders for the panth, who can make proper decisions and are able to challenge the government.
