    I think a lot of this is true. I think Singh Sabha lehar standardised things due to western influence, in a way that wasn't natural to pre-colonial Sikhs maybe?

    I think what you are saying is highly plausible too. Especially given how one author made up something about feeding hindus beef and then retracted the statement. It's obvious that the first goray to mix with Singhs were both in awe and fearful of them. Also jealous as hell.

    I've seen that happen in umpteen locations. People who fought racist whites or grooming gangs becoming blacklisted for employment and then falling into crime to make ends meet. Then this takes another trajectory.

    Logically, it would be likely that informants would be trying to infiltrate for rewards. I think it says a lot about the openness of the Khalsa that they even allowed certain people to convert given the circumstances. Even if they put in extra precautionary measures.

    I think both were done (and other things). What's been recorded might be a very minority practice that could be argued was rational given the mass genocides and hordes of informants of the time? Obviously it wasn't a majority practice.
