  4. Taken from: http://www.naujawani.com/blog/Naujawani.com-launches-3000-pound-annual-student-award Submitted by Harwinder Singh... on 26 May, 2011 - 01:30 This week I have been proud to announce that Naujawani.com is establishing the ‘Kartar Singh Sarabha Student Award’ - an annual prize of £3000 for a deserving university student. This award is part of our social responsibility policy at Naujawani.com whereby we invest both our time and money into the community that we as a company serve. Since 2009, Sikh students in the UK have benefitted from our support in a variety of ways and this award is a key addition to the way in which we hope to promote Sikh Studies in higher education. Students whom have undertaken our Sikh Studies course this year are eligible to apply for the award as will be the case in 2011/2012. Tasked with writing a 10,000 word dissertation on any aspect of Sikhi, the award will be given to the writer of the most engaging submission. Students who registered on the course last autumn were made aware of the optional dissertation early on and so have been undertaking classes with the award in mind - although we did not make precise details public until this week. The prize, currently set at £3000 is intended to go towards paying the university tuition fees of a student and will be awarded before the start of the next academic year. Recent cuts by the UK Government have meant that university students could face up to £9000 tuition fees per year and so the announcement of this award is rather timely! But it has been part of our plans for some time as students who heard our introduction to the course will attest. Students of the Naujawani.com Sikh Studies course gather for the concluding session NAUJAWANI.com We hope that the award will go some way to promoting the academic study of Sikhi amongst young people and encourage greater research of the Sikh way of life at the higher education level. It is vitally important that young people have access to studying Sikh history, culture and ideology in a methodical way that mirrors the format of their studies at university. The prosperity and advancement of us as a people is instigated by the standard we demand of ourselves academically, which should come as no surprise to any Sikh because that is at the heart of what we are - students! Family, Gurdware, Gurmat camps and community classes all play a vital role in teaching young people about Sikhi, but in the field where it matters the most - academia - we as a community have failed thus far to engage and offer an objective Sikh syllabus that provides real substance. This is not a recent oversight. What we as a Sikh Diaspora largely failed to grasp in the late 20th century was the importance of reputable study and research into the Sikh way of life that has led our quam for centuries. I would argue that we have misplaced the honour bestowed on Bhai Gurdas Ji whose vaaran are the key to understanding the Guru Granth Sahib; the contributions to discourse that were given by Baba Deep Singh, Kavi Santokh Singh and Professor Sahib Singh; and the practical shape given to the teacher's path by Sant Teja Singh and Sardar Kapur Singh... all scholars of the Sikh way of life, graduates from the universities of their day. Our Sikh Studies course is one small step on the path toward rectifying this situation and I hope the announcement of the Kartar Singh Sarabha Student Award will amplify that further. We have named this prestigious award after Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha - the teenage hero respected by Punjabis and Sikhs everywhere for the vision he shared, the skills he had as a writer and speaker, and for his unflinching stand against oppression. The work we do at Naujawani.com embodies that same spirit; in all of our shows and commentaries we try to inspire the audience – and particularly young people – to become better at contemplating issues, articulating their thoughts and showing courage. Executed at the tender age of 19 almost a hundred years ago, the one-time UC Berkeley student is long gone, but not forgotten and a worthy role model for students to emulate. Photographer: Gurpreet Kaur Reehal We look forward to announcing the inaugural recipient of this award in a few months time and encourage any students who wish to be considered for the award in the next academic year to enquire about the Sikh Studies course on behalf of their university Sikh society.
  5. The four khalsa colours are Blue, Black, White and Kesri/Basanti (orange/yellow). Panj Pyare say this as has Baba Nihal Singh Ji Nihang. Anyway lets please stick to the topic
  6. Sukhdev Singh Medare, I want to say thank you to you for showing me just how necessary this protest is.
  7. Some of these traditions are so senseless and backwards. As far as I am aware nowhere has Guru Sahib promoted this kind of thinking. Its really only man made punjabi culture, not God's law. Really I mean if there's no blood relation there is absolutely no good reason for such a prohibition.
  8. Your lack of answer is all the answer I needed. It is clear that you have admitted to yourself that what you are doing is against Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Sikhi. It is clear the Sikh sangat and 'Dudely Sangat' who are pushing this agenda are part of two very different paths. Carry on with whatever you wish to do but please declare yourselves as something different from the Sikh Panth. Hadh hogayee hun Sikha noo bakhsh lo.
  9. Let me ask you one question. What do you think Guru Nanak Dev Ji would say about this? Be honest. Do you ever see him saying yes go ahead and have a party with meat and alcohol? Its as simple as that. I'll give you some help, have a look at the sakhi of malik bhago.
  10. Sukhdev Singh Ji you have posted the same message about 5 times which we have had to delete, please don't just copy the same post again and again. As for this hall, you are claiming this hall is to pay for the Gurdwara, really if you are encouraging activites such as drinking, meat eating, dirty music and partying, whats the point of preserving the Gurdwara anyway if you are turning people away from Maharaj?
  11. I came across these promo clips on youtube, can't wait for the full release. http://www.youtube.com/user/420ranjeetsingh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IiPVrxKKLI&feature=channel_video_title http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT9HMjWZmJQ&feature=channel_video_title http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN0iA1yAMmE&feature=channel_video_title http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncz_XU04Wc4&feature=channel_video_title
  12. thank you very much, great article too. I did not realise this was the same saint-scholar Sant Niranjan Singh Ji who wrote all the famous books.
  13. I disagree, Gurbani is also beyond letters yet Maharaj uses them to convey the message to us. It only follows that if letters and words are being used there will be some grammar (vykaran) present. Its nothing do to with European influence, the Faridkot teeka references vykaran and even the Vedas have a grammar system. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to do my own study of vykaran though Guru willing I will start it soon, but could you please post which panktees you are saying violate grammar rules?
  14. Book with people's spiritual experiences http://akj.org/literature/adobe/Books/Book-RSajjan.pdf
  15. Does anyone have any more info on both the Ashram and Sant Niranjan Singh Ji who headed it, and any pictures also? thanks
  16. They can say all they want but its all futile as Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj has himself written in Sri Sarbloh Granth that Gurgaddi has gone to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and the Guru Khalsa Panth. Maharaj's own bani always has much more weight than any other historical document. "In Ko Daras Satguru Ko darshan bolan Guru Shabad Gur Grantha. Dvadas Roop Satigur Eh Kaiyat Dvadas Bhan Pargat Har Santha. Partakya Kala Parbraham Dhanee Shai Granth panth Khalsa Vartanta. Das Gobind Fateh Satgur Ki Khalsa Granth Gur Roop Bidanta" "Having the blessed audience (of the Khalsa) is equal to having the audience of the Guru, as long as they are singing the songs of love held within Guru Granth Sahib. There are twelve forms of the Guru this is what I (Guru Gobind Singh) tell you, There are twelve forms who revealed themselves I tell you Oh Saints. This is the blatant arrow of power dispensed by the ultimate Creator, Deal with the Guru Granth Guru panth as the Khalsa. The slave of the Deathless Being, Guru Gobind Singh, (does not recognise this victory as his), the victory is of supreme true Guru, the Khalsa and the Granth, these are very form and presence of the Guru."
  17. Amritdhari restaurant!!! In London!!!!
  18. funnily enough while I have been on the receiving end of racial slurs, I don't believe I have ever gotten 'bin laden'. The best I got was 'sinbad' which I actually found quite amusing. this was years ago though. nothing recently except for once sum europeans on an esculator giggling, i just eyed them back. Sorry to hear about your experience.
  19. just smile back or even say sat sri akal
  20. it seems like 12 days really makes a difference in mucha size!

  22. http://www.keertan.org/andromeda.php?q=f&f=%2FBeant+Banian%2FNitnem%2FNitnem+-+Gurdwara+Tapoban+Sahib%2C+Toronto%2C+CAN I think its a bit more subtle than what you;re asking for but its got a bit of a tune and its very shudh. if your starting with jap ji sahib with that it takes a few minutes before it gets a bit more melodious.
  23. Happy belated birthday veerjeeo!
  24. Vaheguroo Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguroo Ji Ki Fateh to my sister, most have said whats needed to be said, really this relationship would be damaging to you. About your saddness, please read Salok Mahalla Nauva by Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji (its got a translation as well just in case you can't read gurmukhi): http://www.gurbanifiles.org/pocket_pc/SlokM9_GE.pdf Please read the whole thing, the things Guru Ji teaches us in this about life are just priceless. If only we could remember all of this all the time we would never be sad again. Also remember whatever you love about someone, its not the person that you love. In reality all things that we find good in this world or giving us pleasure are really Vaheguroo himself. If you want the infinite times the happiness you recieved from your boyfriend Vaheguroo can give it to you. I heard a katha today which was great, he was talking about family relations (we can apply it to your situation to). He said that all relations we have in this world are based on worldly things, in reality all the people we meet who we seem to have love with and love us are really only interested in what they can get from us, who in this world is a totally self-less lover? Our Guru who knows everything tells us there is no one, everyone is in it for their own happiness, even if we don't realise it, what the Guru is saying to us about this is nothing but the truth. There is no relationship in this world or the next that will not cause us problems of some sort except for a relationship with our Guru and Vaheguroo. Make a relationship with them and I guarantee you you will eventually feel countless times more bliss and love from him than anyone, so much so that you will not even remember anything else. What you need to do is ardas. you need to do a heartfelt prayer to your Guru Ji asking him to lead you the right way and for his protection and help in everyway. I would also suggest getting it touch with some proper GurSikhs just to get your focus on whats good for you and to realise there is life outside of one person. Especially when you have the choice between a relationship that could ruin you in worldly terms and spiritual terms or friendship with those that could lead you the right way. Give us here a rough idea of where you live and I am sure someone could tell you about when good GurSikhs meet to do sangat and talk. Vaheguroo Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguroo Ji Ki Fateh
