  1. Lord Singh is truly a credit to the British Sikh community, I just hope when he has passed that suitable Singhs and Kaurs will be able to take his place. Lord SIngh is indeed articulate and well educated some one who represents us extremely well.
  2. What also is worrying is the disgusting language being used by the original poster to describe our Muslim brothers. It shows only ignorance and nothing else.
  3. If you think about it there must be many descendants thousands probably, maybe tens of thousands. The Sikh Gurus with the exception of Sri Guru Har Krishan ji all had children, Guru Gobind Singh jees line passed away possibily other Gurujis lines too. Now many of these childrens would have children of their own and so on. We sometimes seek our Guru in their descendants but Guruji is to be always found in the eternal Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji
  4. Glad to see such consensus amongst the community, maybe the wider media should ask what Sikhs really feel rather just reporting the side of a few.
  5. According to SGPC leaders she has. Her new book mentions a boy in a class room making comments about Sikh girl "One of the characters, Fats, describes Sukhvinder, his classmate, as ‘mustachioed, yet large-mammaried’, adding that ‘scientists remain baffled by the contradictions of the hairy man-woman’." I know name calling like that can cause upset to a Sikh person but isn't that the reality of the world? People will make fun of others who stand out and a turbanned Sikh girl with facial hair stands out more than others. IMO this story helps discuss issues and shouldn't just be ignored to avoid controversy. 6. These things need to be done within the guidliness of UK law, the local police and authorities should be consulted if we fear any particular attack. We are good members of the community we pay our taxes respect the law and serve our society so the authorities also have a duty to protect its citizens.
  7. I do not at all think that Sikhi is in odds against science. Many religions have their own creation myths which are used to explain existence but these stories are simple answers for simple minds to complex questions. The whole point of Sikhi is to acquire knowledge and wisdom and use Wahegurus teachings to understand his creation. The knowledge out there can take a lifetime and usually many many lifetimes but as our souls "evolve" we come closer to God and the secrets of his creation. Remember science isn't an enemy of religion it a companion of it.
  8. The mission was only a partial success, better than a failure, I suppose it was the same message when he was trying to send in his Bhagat Singh film where the Shaheed was portrayed as an atheist.
  9. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/news-interviews/Ajay-assures-to-remove-objectionable-contents-from-Son-of-Sardar/articleshow/16236526.cms Shows what the Sikh community can achieve when we are organised and put our minds to such serious issues.
  10. I think it is good to do it when possible but this should be done as a starting point, i.e we should bear in mind the Gurjis had their reasons to make the paths Sahibs time specific.
  11. That seems so simple but almost never happens, as though the gurdwara committees aren't interested at all.
  12. It is true evidence is needed but probably won't we obtained easily in this situation, such a shame
  13. My biggest fear is if a terrorist poses as a Sikh and uses a "Kirpan" as a weapon or hides a weapon in a turban on a plane.
  14. We should be interested in making Sikhi more accessible and spreading the word of Guruji to a greater audience and we can use the media as a tool to enable that.
  15. More Sikhs on television and in the media may help, see the topic below http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/66712-are-sikhs-underepresented-in-the-media/
  16. It seems that the board members are not interested in this particular topic but to me it is an important one. If we have representatives of the SIkh community on teleision then we there will be more awareness and Sikh and non-SIkh people will be drawn to this religion. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, why? Is it because they have something to offer that no other religion has or is it because they are an organized aith and know how to get their message across?
  17. Come on guys lets make some noise the BBC are constantly showing Muslims on their religious and moral shows on Sunday mornings, this is just promoting one religion against another.
  18. I whole heartdely agree, we need to change this mentality when there is negative news, these criminals are described as Asian but when it is postive then they become Pakistani or Muslim. Take the Northern race riots the same thing was done even though there were hardly any if no Sikhs, Hindus, Gujaratis involved.
  19. How about this one? http://www.religiousforums.com/forum/#font-color-3366ff-discuss-individual-religions
  20. If one Sikh shouts in a crowd their voice will be drowned out, but if we all shout then that voice will have to be heard. Take this programme, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01g6gf1 The story of the turban, It was quite an informative programme however it was shown on a wednesday late at night, I made a complaint to the BBC saying it was shown at a time when few people could watch it. Now nothing gets done if one person complains but if you all take two minutes to do the same then the BBC would need to listen, Please take the two minutes it takes to do the same using this link https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/complaints/forms/?reset=#anchor
  21. There is alot of propaganda out there and we need to do all we can to counteract it. IMO we need to get the message of Sikhi out to the wider world, and we need to harness the power of the internet to do that. How about facebook pages or going on to mixed religion forums to get the point across?
  22. Since 9/11 I Muslims have had much media atention in the UK and around the world, so much of this has been negative so it is responsible for segments of the media to counteract that with positive programming. However its has now got to the point where Sikhs receive such little attention whereas the attention received by Islam has even helped in the increase of converts to their faith. Should there be more focus on Sikhs and SIkhism? Take the BBC programme "THE BIG QUESTIONS" which discusses moral and religious issues it almost always has Muslims on the front seat debating issues and representing the Islamic viewpoint but there is hardly ever a Sikh discussing the Sikh point. Take this show for example which you can watch online, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01h5mfp This programme discusses Halal meat something which many Sikhs feel is extremely relevant to our religion, yet there was no Sikh there to represent our viewpoint. (Please don't make this topic about whether meat is allowed or not, that isn't the point) Do we not deserve more attention and airtime? Wouldn't such time help teach the world and indeed Sikhs about the beauty of this religion? Isn't it important that in this secular western world that all religions are represented? What the real question is what can Sikhs do change this, why aren't we organised like many other groups? Please share your opinions.
  23. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01g6gf1/The_Story_of_the_Turban/ A great programme there guys please watch it, its about the role the Turban plays for SIkhs and the impact it has had. Such programmes really need to be supported as it provides awareness to the greater public. It is especially important as media attention only seems to discuss Islamic issues. I also suggest you contact the BBC and make them aware that they are many SIkhs who are educated in these matters and demand more media attention, I implore you to contact them and ask your freinds and family to do so aswell. This is what I said to them........ "I wish to commend the BBC on showing this insightful and entertaining programme on such an important topic. I would hope there would be many more programmes about Sikhs and our religion. The only criticism I would have is that the programme was shown at such a late a time on a weekday." ......and I used this feedback form to do it, it only takes two minutes to do it. Please feel free to copy and paste my comments if you like.
  24. We all know that halal meat is sacrilegous, we are not at all permitted to eat flesh consumed in such a cruel and inhumane way. However why is it that the wider community are more concerned with appeasing Muslim's but when it comes to meeting the dietary requirements of Sikh's we are given the back seat? Halal meat should be banned Parents angered as evry child given Halal meat It is simply because we do not stand up and make people take notice of us, Muslim's will complain, march and protest for their rights (and good luck to them) however us Sikh's do not do anything. We are not asking for any special treatment especially when it comes to Halal meat. We want, what most ordinary people want us to not have this method of slaughter thrust upon us. Even in areas which are predominately Sikh we have this problem as Halal meat trial at Southall Mcdonalds Mc.donalds is not the only place also the restaurant chain of nando's, school dinners too are mostly halal Please brothers and sisters take your time to complain about this most serious issue, more and more places are becoming Halal and this is making it very difficult for Sikh's to live their life according to reht maryada. It is simply not a matter of eating somewhere else, or simply saying meat is just meat. If it was then why did our Dashmesh pitha make it clear Halal was forbidden? My brethren please do not make this article about "Are we allowed to eat meat or not?" That will lead to infighting when we have work to do. How bad is it that our ancestors gave their lives for the Sikh way of life but we cannot even write letters of complaint or stage protests? Mcdonalds Halal survey Nandos, contact us sikh reht maryada The Sikh Reht Maryada (The Official Code of Conduct) An Amritdhari Khalsa Sikh is not allowed to eat the meat of an animal slaughtered the Muslim way. In Punjabi the word "Kuttha" specifically means meat prepared according to the Muslim ritual slaughter. Punjabi-English Dictionary, Punjabi University, Dept. of Punjabi Lexicography, Published Dec. 1994. "Kuttha: meat of animal or fowl slaughtered slowly as prescribed by Islamic law." Punjabi English Dictionary, Singh Bros., Amritsar "Kuttha: Tortured, killed according to Mohammedan law." What is Jhatka Meat and Why? Jhatka meat is meat in which the animal has been killed quickly without suffering or religious ritual. Sikhism, A Complete Introduction, Dr. H.S.Singha & Satwant Kaur, Hemkunt Press We must give the rationale behind prescribing jhatka meat as the approved food for the Sikhs. According to the ancient Aryan Hindu tradition, only such meat as is obtained from an animal which is killed with one stroke of the weapon causing instantaneous death is fit for human consumption. However, with the coming of Islam into India and the Muslim political hegemony, it became a state policy not to permit slaughter of animals for food, in any other manner, except as laid down in the Quran - the kosher meat prepared by slowly severing the main blood artery of the throat of the animal while reciting verses from the Quran. It is done to make slaughter a sacrifice to God and to expiate the sins of the slaughter. Guru Gobind Singh took a rather serious view of this aspect of the whole matter. He, therefore, while permitting flesh to be taken as food repudiated the whole theory of this expiatory sacrifice and the right of ruling Muslims to impose iton the non-Muslims. Accordingly, he made jhatka meat obligatory for those Sikhs who may be interested in taking meat as a part of their food
