  1. This book is out of print and hard to get hold of. I've seen it selling second hand for a small fortune in the past. Very useful to help build up vocabulary. https://www.scribd.com/doc/300210173/An-introduction-to-the-Sacred-Language-of-Sikhs-by-Christopher-Shackle
  2. West born amritdhari sikhs in majority don't use punjabi as their mother tongue. They can't keep up conversation in punjabi nor they know how to write punjabi. If they don't take immediate steps then it won't be far when our language will be gone from our households. I have seen examples of other faith who stressed very much on their language (jews) and take extra steps to preserve it. In india sikh youth feels inferior if they speak punjabi while in west sikh youth never got a chance to learn nor any attempts are being made by parents to preserve em. It is sad to see parents sending their kids to sunday gurdwara school and thinks that it is enough of their parental duty to preserve language that our guru sahib jee created. How do you feel about this issue?
  3. Can anybody help me with tracing the origin of the Punjabi word 'Gence' ? Not a word that's used as often as it used to be - my grandparents used to say it all the time as a way of describing a race or group of people - but I'm currently doing some research on the Greek settlements in Punjab and am unsure whether the Punjabi word is or isn't related to the Greek word 'genos' (as in 'genocide' - destruction of a group of people). Is the Punjabi word from the Greek or does it have some other origin ?
  4. So......I conducted a little experiment. I took these 4 languages: Punjabi Bengali Gujarati Hindi and I did a Google News search for each of them. Here's the results: Bengali = The results pretty much reflected the fact that it was a 'news' search and the results were a healthy mix of news and high-brow experimental type cinema culture Hindi = You got exactly what it says on the tin with this one. The 'news' search brought up general news. Gujarati = Mostly a healthy mix of business news, exam news and cuisine. Punjabi = Singing and dancing. Nothing but singing and dancing. Occasional food item but the rest of it almost entirely singing and dancing. You even try and click on some random page, like page 3 or page 4 hoping and praying you'll find something other than singing and dancing.....But no. Even on page 3, 4 and 17 etc there is nothing but singing and dancing. Is this really what we've been reduced to now ? ?
  5. I speak in Punjabi with my parents. I speak in English with my brother and sister. We need to speak more Punjabi at home especially with the new generation. Speaking 2 languages is a skill. Never forget your mother tongue.
  6. The old Punjabi doesn’t have the letter Z it is derived from Farsi. The new modern Punjabi does have Z. Is is Okay to use it in Gurbani.
  7. Is there anybody who knows Urdu here ? if yes, can you please provide lyrics from this video From 11:15 to 13:35 :- I am native Punjabi but there are Urdu words here which i just dont even know the pronounciation of...... THANK YOU..
  8. I signed up to Sikh Sangat to simply find out where I can learn Punjabi. I would be grateful if someone could help point me in the right direction. I am a Sikh 24 years of age from the UK (Slough), and have been brought up in a household where English is the main language. My issue is I can just about speak and understand it, having this problem makes me feel very disconnected from the Sangat. I like to help people from my own community, but find it impossible at times due to a major language barrier. I know this is a common problem with many Sikh people I know, why is this issue not being addressed within our community? Thank you.
  9. Dear All, A polite notice lets try to keep this site clean without finding the need to use vile language in sometimes the same sentences concerning our Guruji. Many thanks.
  10. Sat sree akaal I am trying to learn some Punjabi so I can better understand Gurbani and communicate with those in Gurdwara who speak little or no English. I recently ordered http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Panjabi-Two-Audio-CDs/dp/0071766022/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1386605716&sr=8-5&keywords=teach+yourself+complete+panjabi'>Teach Yourself: Complete Panjabi but I am aware I'll later on need some additional book or program to help me get to the next level, along with trying to speak Panjabi with native speakers on a regular basis. For anyone on here who's taught themselves Punjabi, or if anyone here is a teacher of the language, I would like some suggestions on what is a good book or program to pick up. (I have used Pimsleur before, but it is a bit expensive and it is not available at my library). Thank you (And moderators, sorry if I put this post in the wrong area of the forum)
  11. WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH ADMIN ji, benti, can we please put a ban on racist language. Terms such as "p*ki" etc which seem to be used on the regular on this forum. In the same other profane terms are banned, can a ban be applied to these racist terms please? * P*ki: Chiefly British Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for a person of Pakistani or South Asian birth or descent. The term may be used amongst people of Pakistani decent, however, what right does that give us to use the term? And those who do use it in a derogatory manner, are only associating themselves with those people. As a Sikh forum, one of very few, this platform for healthy discussion attracts people from all walks of life. Sikhs wanting to further their knowledge of Sikhi and non-Sikhs wanting to gain an understanding of Sikhs and Sikhi, respectively. Currently, there are two discussions where profane language is being used. Is this the image we want to create of Sikhs and Sikhi alike? There are children using this site. Yes, this is a forum and therefore discussions can not always be restricted. However, in the same way that other profanity is banned, words such as the "F" word etc, racist terms should also be banned. In the end, it comes down to us, the users of this amazing platform, to watch what we say. In an ideal world, Admin would not need to ban any words. We must ask ourselves, is this what we have been taught by our Guru Sahib? And is this the image we want to create of ourselves? We are Sikhs. Children of our father, Dasam Pita, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj. Pul chuk muaf ji WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH
