Commission head concerned over Sikh youths in jails

Coming down heavily on Punjab Police, he alleged police officials of jaunting in foreign countries in the name of investigations. The Minority Commission Chairman said that he had urged the central government to put a check on such trips

Ludhiana, March 30: MINORITY Commission Chairman and MP, Tarlochan Singh said that he took up the issue of release of all Sikh youths languishing in various jails with the Union Government. Singh was in the city on a personal visit.

Speaking with Newsline, the Minorities Commission Chairman said, ‘‘I raised this issue in the parliament and was supported by senior Congress leader Ambika Soni. Consequently, the Home Minister assured me that he would look into the matter.’’

Singh added, ‘‘I have urged the Government of India to release all the Sikh youths who have served sentences in various jails. There are many young boys who are still facing trials and some of whom are in foreign countries and have been nabbed by police.’’

Coming down heavily on the Punjab Police, Singh said, ‘‘The police is fond of jaunting in foreign lands and is always trying to find ways to go on one.’’ Citing one such example, he said, ‘‘The official trip to unearth a 15-year-old case and nabbing the terrorist involved is nothing less than a vacation. I have asked the Government of India to put a check on such trips.’’

However, the chairman refused to comment on bringing to book the guilty of 1984 anti-Sikh riots saying, ‘‘We will wait for the Nanavati Commission’s report for that. I have asked the Centre to the Minorities Commission a copy of the report. The Commission has not received the copy yet.’’

Gill alias Kuki he had made a special reference to Ranjit Singh Gill alias Kuki who is serving life imprisonment for the conviction in trade union leader Ajay Maken and his wife Gitanjali Maken’s case. Kuki has served more than 16 years in Tihar Jail and his case for release is due for hearing in both the Supreme Court as well as the Pardon Committee of Government of Delhi.
