Man shot by armed police on Tube

A man has been shot at Stockwell Tube station by armed police officers.

Passenger Mark Whitby told BBC News he had seen an Asian man shot five times by "plain-clothes police officers" with a handgun.

Passengers were evacuated from the Northern Line station in south London. Police have also cordoned off surrounding streets.

Eyewitnesses say armed police have surrounded a mosque in east London that has been evacuated after a bomb scare.

Police are hunting four would-be bombers after Thursday's London blasts.

The bombers fled after detonators went off, causing small blasts, but failed to detonate the bombs themselves.

Services on the Victoria and Northern lines have been suspended following a request by the police, London Underground said.

Ambulances including an air ambulance have been sent to the scene.

Mr Whitby, told BBC News: "I was sitting on the train reading my paper.

"I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'!

"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him.

"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he's dead."

Passenger Briony Coetsee said: "We were on the Tube and then we suddenly heard someone say, 'Get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots."

if they took control of him then there's no point of shooting him. Two choices..

either the person running was illegal immigrant trying to escape police or he was the bomber..

yah wheni read this iw as likt waat? I always though police could only fire if fire upon! plus...FIVE shots! All he needed was one to the leg or stomach to disable him... but FIVE shots! That scares me.

Im pretty much sure that the guy who was wearing the trench coat (overcoat) in the middle of summer with wires sticking out needed to be taken down by shots before he blew himself in middle of innocent ppls. I think the action taken by police is right. They warned him and gave the warning.. Halt, or else they gonna shoot but maan dah sheer started running down the stairs..

Unfortunately the guy shot had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks. He was a Brazilian guy, for some reason or another, who ran away from the police.

The guy had a trenchcoat, and was acting suspiciously. Since there are four suicide bombers on the loose in the UK and the police thought that this guy might be one of them, they killed him. This was after they gave him several warnings to surrender himself, but he ran away from the police, adding to the suspicion.

They shot five times in the head cos if a suicide bomber is shot in the leg or arm, they can still detonate the explosive to kill everyone around them. So the only option the police have to stop a suspected suicide bomber is to kill him outright.
