Canadian group presents memo to Vajpayee

AMRITSAR: South Asian Human Rights Group of Canada (SAHRGC) in a memorandum presented to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee demanded release of army personnel who had deserted barracks during Operation Bluestar in 1984, abolition of the blacklist on Sikhs who were prevented from visiting India after 1984 and release of Sikh detainees who were arrested in connection with Khalistan movement.

Harpal Singh Nagra, president of the SAHRGC in an e-mail message sent to TNN on Saturday said that they had also urged Vajpayee to issue orders for investigations of the killings of innocent people in Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat . He alleged that Congress government had failed to provide justice to the Sikh masses .

Nagra further mentioned that the group had also urged Indian government to actively communicate with the government of Pakistan for the release the POWs and other Indians who were in Pakistani jails for a long time.

The SAHRGC was all-praise to the efforts made by Rulda Singh, Gen. Secretary NRI Cell BJP and All India Gen. Secretary Rashtriya Sikh Sangat and Bhishma Agnihotri Ambassador-at-large for Government of India in New York for building bridges to fill in the gaps between the government and the Sikhs.

It was due to their efforts that 22 Sikhs on the blacklist were cleared for travel to India, said Nagra.

He said the group felt satisfied that the death penalty of Prof. Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar would be commuted as per recommendations of the Indian Government made to the Preside
