Young People?

WGJKWGJF everyone!!!!!

WOW this is the first topic I've made...AMAZING!!!!

Anyway, topic at hand...

I'm concerned how there are young people, the next generation, who are increasingly lacking interest in going to the Gurudwara/ following their religion.

I mean don't get me wrong, there are some sikhs who ACTUALLY follow their religion. I don't think that you should be 100% committed from the day you are born. I think it's better that a sikh guy or girl learns about their religion through growing up, that way they understand our religion better.

Making mistakes is also a good thing in a way as well, so long as you don't make the same mistake again eg. drinking, smoking. That way, you're stronger, because you've overcome problems in your life, you've moved from the bad path to the good one.

Also, people from India reckon because they've grown up in India they know all about their religion. In fact it's the complete opposite, they think that they're following sikhism, but in fact they're focusing more on traditions!!! Tradition + Religion = DON'T MIX BIG TIME!!!

I think it is mainly guys who show disrespect...they only go to the Gurudwara whenever they feel like going, and when they do, they do Muttar thik then hang out with mates!!!! I mean look at most of the people in London for crying out loud!!!! They reckon that the clothes which they wear, the things which they do is all because we're in England- 'it's modern' (WHATEVER)

In my opinion, it's a test for us...a test to check whether we can resist the ridulous temptations offered to us here. Yeah, young people (I'm talking about my age 18- onwards) think it's alright, because it's so easy to fall into these traps, but it's harder work to be a good person (praying etc). Don't get me wrong, just because a person prays doesn't mean that he or she is a good person in terms of attitude and all, but they TEND to have their priorities better.

In the end, what are you trying to achieve? OPINIONS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! grin.gif

I dont even get what you said and what you're trying to ask?

Opinions about young people not following sikhism? that's a problem as we all know, but we cant do anything except just do more camps, etc this has been discussed millions of times i suggest you try searching.

I think it is mainly guys who show disrespect...they only go to the Gurudwara whenever they feel like going

Don't we "feel" like going to the gurdwara before we actually go? or do we say aww man i dont wanna go but i have to ? i dont get it

Lastly, it's a concern for most of the people, but people who actually care are actually doing something and increasing awareness and doing parchar. All we can do is do ardaas so people can go on the right path.

I think the root issue is that many young people don't feel inspired to go to the gurdwara or have the basic understanding of Guru Granth Sahib ji as Guru.

And the way in which most gurdwara are managed, most people who supposedly 'run' them are there for self interest rather than propagation of the faith.

Hmmm...on a personal note,to make it more clearer, what if your own relation (sis or bro) just completely side tracked, and drunk etc, and just didn't want to listen to ya? You can't force a person to go to the Gurudwara, that'll only make them not want to go, as they won't go from their heart...

I agree with all these comments, keep them coming guys!!!

Its true that most of the Sikh youth does not attend Gurdwara, but the ones that are have limitless pyar for Sikhi and are so dedicated to simran and seva, just look at the youth on this forum for example, the Sikhs who post have so much love for our Guru and the gyan he's blessed us with! So when we do see that most of our youth is moving away from Sikhi, we also need to look at the Sikh youth that is doing so much for our Panth, and in turn, look at ourselves, and what we can do. It's quality, not quantity that matters. As a friend once told me, diamonds are precious because they're very few in numbers, but still seem to amaze everyone simply because of their beauty.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
