2 Teens Guilty Of Manslaughter In Senior's Death

Two teenage boys were found guilty of manslaughter Friday in the beating death of an elderly Indo-Canadian man in Surrey's Bear Creek Park last year.

The boys, who cannot be identified because they were 13 and 15 at the time of the attack, had been charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of 76-year-old Shingara Singh Thandi of Surrey.

The senior was beaten with baseball bats and robbed in a washroom in July 2005. He died in hospital three weeks later.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice William Grist told the packed courtroom in New Westminster that the boys lacked the experience and foresight to show murderous intent.

The youths were also convicted of aggravated assault and robbery of another senior, 83-year-old Mewa Singh Bains, who was also brutally beaten with bats at Bear Creek Park the day before the Thandi attack.

He died later in hospital.

However, the two youths were not charged with murder in that case because Bains's death could not be linked directly to the attack.

Dozens of friends and family of the two were outraged that the boys were found not guilty of murder. They said it sends the wrong message to teens who commit violent acts.

They also noted that the youngest of the two teens could receive a sentence of just two years. The older boy could be elevated to adult court.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 23.
