My definition of a Sikh:

Most people would say, "Your not a Sikh until you have taken Amrit". In some ways i agree but at the same time there are so many Amritdharri's out there but they dont have that love, that devotion, that faith like Gursikhs do. I agree that giving your head to Satguru Ji's is a huge step but then if you dont maintain that love within your self; who are you trying to kid?

A true Sikh loves his Guru.

A true Sikh sees' all Ten Masters within Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

A true Sikh never abandones Satguru Ji at Amritveylaa.

A true Sikh never forget's the Creator of all Creations.

A true Sikh continues to say Vaheguru's Name with every breath and morsel of Food.

A true Sikh will rise in the early portion of the morning, take bath and recite his Name.

A true Sikh will give his head to Guru Saahib such as did the five punj piyaarey.

A true Sikh will always remain in his home of Saach Kaand.

A true Sikh will learn Gurbani Kirtan.

A true Sikh will love Guru Saahib more than anyone in the whole world.

The minds of the Gursikhs are filled with the love of the Lord; they come and worship the Guru.

They trade lovingly in the Lord's Name, and depart after earning the profit of the Lord's Name.

The faces of the Gursikhs are radiant; in the Court of the Lord, they are approved.

The Guru, the True Guru, is the treasure of the Lord's Name; how very fortunate are the Sikhs who share in this treasure of virtue.

thinaa gurasikhaa kuno ho vaariaa jo behadhiaa outhadhiaa har naam dhiaavehi

I am a sacrifice to those Gursikhs who, sitting and standing, meditate on the Lord's Name. ||11||

p.s- Gursikhi is a lifestyle not a religion.

The life of that gurmukh is fortunate whom meeting some Sikh of the Guru has come to the shelter of the Guru.

He bows before primeval Purusa (God) and becomes blessed after having the sight of such a Guru.

After circumambulation he bows on the lotus feet of Guru.

Becoming kind, the Guru recites true mantra Vaheguru for him.

sach raas rehiraas dhae pairee(n) pai jag pairee(n) paayaa||

The Sikh with his capital of devotion falls at the feet of Guru and the whole world bows at his feet.

kaam karodhh virodhh har lobh moh aha(n)kaar thajaayaa||

God (the Guru) eradicates his lust, anger and resistance and gets his greed, infatuation and ego erased.

sq sMqoK dieAw Drm dwn nwm ieSnwn idRVwXw]

sath sa(n)thokh dhaeiaa dhharam dhaan naam eishanaan dhrirraayaa||

Instead, the Guru makes him practise truth, contentment, dharma, name, charity and ablution.

gur isK lY gur isK sdwXw ]ó]

gur sikh lai gur sikh sadhaayaa ||a||

Adopting the teachings of the Guru, the individual is called a Sikh of the Guru.

Religion is a belief or way of life, dharm is a lif of righteousness. Dharm has evolved, a set of principles according to which one lives and which are true and real, but most of all they make sense.

My parents are Sikh, so I was born a sikh and brought up according to the dharm. I am a Sikh because I know and understand my dharm. To follow one has to understand. Its difficult to carry out an instruction without knowing how, when and why. I have questioned my dharm and it has always made sense to me, so I am a Sikh.

I do not follow my faith blindly. I disagree, argue and oppose some statements, but yet I begin to understand and change my views and values accordingly.

Sikhism is my dharma because I cannot think of another dharam I would more like to follow. I have appraised Sikhism and I recognise its importance to me,

It has taken me time and hard work to understand Sikhism, but I have achieved something.

      I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124

      That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.

      Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!

      Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
