Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

I'd like to thank all those who answered my previous question regarding the Karra. I find myself today in another unsure state.

I've just about opened my eyes to reality that I may not be going to UNI and I had planned. Today I approached my uncle (who is more of a godfather to me). He's Hindu, educated, owns his own business and has made a million.

He advises me regarding everything A-Z. I approached him today regarding a childhood dream I had of becoming an Army Officer, if not that - officer in the RAF. We talked for a few hours & his support was with me either way (he himself is from a strong army background).

He left me with a question though. One which didnt occur to me earlier but is troubling me now.

If I was in Punjab & I had signed up to the army it would have been perfectly fine. We're right next to three countries which can anytime attack.

The British recently have gone to unnessesary wars. Sometimes dragged in and sometimes not. No matter how ethnically 'equal' they show themselves to be, it's not alway the truth.

In the Falklands memorial thing - the Gurkha's were hardly mentioned. The Gurkha's were the main guys sent there!

Throughout history they have sent other people in first to die. Scotts - Irish ect ect.

Racism exists everywhere - thats not an issue with me.

But the fact that these days countries sent in armies for the sake of oil & it leads to death of civilians. - Do I really want to be part of that?

Although I don't intend to join the infantry, as part of the Royal Signals (IT & communicatons dept) i'd still hold responsbility.

So I'm thinking.. I'm really stuck. If you get an order, you have to carry it through. If the order comes through the Defence Secretary, it will have to be done.

I'm the type of person who is very pationate about his surroundings. I care for whatever area I am in. My white friend sometimes say's I'm more English than him.

The Sikh's have had a legacy of master soldiering & warfare. Some of you might have sibling who are in the army, navy or raf.

How do I come to a conclusion which satisfys me when I myself am now totally mixed up.

I don't anything but am talking anyway.

You know what yeh if you want my opinion its like this:

If you really feel you want to be a army officer person then go for it, but don't fight for like the british army. If you can try and enlist some how on Panjaab's army (do they even have one?lol) or something

lol I'm not trying to make my own rules up, but can people from other countries fight for the 'mother land' instead of where they live?

Without being rude, i don't think you'll get much advice from here (as you can see my "advice" is a bit lame), we don't exactly know crazy amount about army stuff lol well i dont - talk to people that know you mainly your family

weigh the advantages of you being a army officer and the disadvantages and see which list is longer!!!

lol and dont cheat

Some people mind find this messed up but talking about general karma....man if Sikhs help in killing innocents, and war involves this, especially recent ones by the British, we will have to pay for this in some way or another.

Sikhs did lots of good (i.e fighting nazis) under goray but they also did wrong (i.e. quelling the Chinese rebellion in the opium wars).

It is your choice, personally I'm not sure if I could just follow orders to help kill people who have done nothing wrong to me or my people.

who is your people, guru sahib told us that the whole world should be seen as our people, "one humanity" ...and when you say goray and muslims..why include everyone? sikhs are murders...

when i say that everyone gets offended right?....not all muslims are bad, not all goray are bad..and not all sikhs are bad...next time..don't drag the ENTIRE group together and bash them with those kinds of comments...guru sahib tells us to look at everyone eqaully...yet we bash everyone with bigotry comments?

if you want to join the army, go for it...if you don't want to be involved with combat that you do not agree upon then , enlist as an engineer, mechanic...but i am not sure on how their contracts work....however why not try the united nations...goto one of their branches...and see how they work?

Even if you join as a medic or engineer you're still participating in the death of civilians. The western world these days does not fight for righteous deeds. Saying that, the same time some other event can come up in which it is a rightious but I won't be able to enlist.

I hate to generalise but most of the guys in the infantry and regular soldiers here in the UK are basically racist chavs who just enlist to kill muslims. They're too trigger happy. But we can't say that for everyone.

So.. should I be joining an organisation where certain people are of such a type?

Should I say to myself.. "I'm joining an organisation which to be quite frank is controlled by oil hungry control freaks & is full of racists" or should I be saying "I'm joining an organisation which for sure in the next 20 years will be quite ethnically diverse & I'm needed to serve my country for any future threats".

It's really annoying. One and a half year I've thought this through but I left out the most important question of them all.

Anyway..

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
