Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee tells us that death will come to us all one day and when that day comes the Messenger's of Death shall grab the soul and take it to the Dargaah of Akaal Purakh (the Court of the Immortal Lord).

Maṯ har visriai jam vas pāhi.

If you forget the Lord, you will fall into the clutches of the Messenger of Death.

Anṯ kāl mūṛė cẖot kẖāhi. ||7||

At that very last moment, you fool, you shall be beaten. ||7||

(Ang 1189)

Guru jee says that only those souls are saved from the Messengers of Death who Jap Naam (meditate on the Lord's Name):

ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਤੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ॥

Mūṛĥė kāhė bisārio ṯai rām nām.

You fool! How can you have forgotten the Lord's Name?

Anṯ kāl ṯėrai āvai kām. ||1|| rahāo.||

At the very last moment, it and it alone shall be of any use to you. ||1||Pause||

(Ang 1189)

This reminded of someone who died a few years ago. My mum told me that when she went to do afsos (paying condolence) at the family's house, the mother of the man who died said she was with her son when he died. The man was an alcoholic and was in intensive care. He was placed in a room by himself. His mother was with him before he died and she said that her son was screaming and shouting to his mother, "They have come to get me... Save me! Get them away." His mother replied that "No one is here. It's just me. What are you scared of." He said that his bed was surrounded with growling black dogs who were trying to snatch him away. Soon after the man passed away. When my mum came home and told me this, I was shocked. We all read Gurbaani and Guru jee reminds us of the consequences of our actions but it never hits home.

Rām simar pacẖẖuṯāhigā man.

Meditate in remembrance on the Lord, or else you will regret it in the end, O mind.

Pāpī jīarā lobẖ karaṯ hai āj kāl uṯẖ jāhigā. ||1|| rahāo.||

O sinful soul, you act in greed, but today or tomorrow, you will have to get up and leave. ||1||Pause||

(Ang 1106)

Gurbaani tells us that those Jap Naam and take the support of Guru jee are not approached by the Messenger of Death:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

Gurmukẖ jamkāl nėṛ na āvai.

The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.

(Ang 231)

I remember reading the Jeevans (life stories) and accounts of Great Gursikhs passing away and how they are described of smiling or looking peaceful and them describing angelic looking Gursikhs coming to receive the soul to take it to the Court of Waheguru. Sat Naam, Waheguru. One eye-witness account of a Gursikh's death that I came across is of Bhai Randheer Singh jee:-

The Final Moments of Bhai Sahib's Earthly Life

By Bhai Trilochan Singh in Sankhaep Jeevan Bh. Sb. Randhir Singh

Translated by Admin www.tapoban.org

In 1960 Bhai Sahib's leg veins became weak due to having spent so much time in the dark dungeons, though the rest of his body was healthy. He only had trouble walking about. On April 13, 1961, all the Jatha came to see Bhai Sahib for Vaisakhi. On April 14th he wished good bye to everyone and sent them off. On April 16th, in the morning, he prepared to leave for Gurpuri.

It was a Sunday. On Saturday night, his entire bed had moved and his body seemed very restless as though the time had arrived for that great soul to leave his body.

From Amrit Vela, Veer Balbir Singh [bh. Sb.'s son], Veer Sajan Singh, Bibi Dalaer Kaur, I and my Singhnee along with some others sat beside Bhai Sahib. At 7 am, I rose to have some words with Bhai Balbir Singh who was in the yard when Bhai Sahib raised both his arms, motioning for me to remain seated. I sat near him. He lovingly called Bibi Dalaer Kaur and he tightly clasped my right arm. I took his other hand and put it to my chest. A very strong current passed through my body.

Everyone began to feel that the moment was drawing near. Everyone wanted to say some words to him or at least hear some final words but that holy soul who had spent his final days in peace, happiness and Sehaj avashtaa, also made his final moments miraculous.

With the power of his breaths, he said "Vahi" and raised the swaas from his naabh kanval and with "Guru" he took his breaths to teh Gagan Mandal of Dasam Duaar. Again for the second time and then the third time he said "Vahiguru" he put his swaas in Dasam Duaar and then took his place in Gurpuri.

This happened at 7.30am on April 16, 1961. His saskaar (cremation) happened at the pond between Gujjarwal and Narangwal.

According to what we believe, say and act in this life, at the moment of death that will flash before our eyes and that will manifest itself into the messengers to take us to the next life.

Gurmukẖ lāhā lai gaė manmukẖ cẖalė mūl gavāė jīo. ||19||

The Gurmukhs reap their profits and leave, while the self-willed manmukhs lose their investment and depart. ||19||

(Ang 74)

May Guru Sahib do kirpaa on us all and bless us with Gursikhi Jeevan and Naam.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
