A topic close to my heart as I have been involved in kickboxing for many years and I agree with other members that mma is the way forward. I also feel that at any martial arts you participate in is better than none as long as you are dedicated and train hard. Please also be mindful that there are so many clubs out there with instructors who are not qualified to be instructors. Please ask to see credentials, references, insurance, word of mouth. it is so easy to set up that there are so many cowboys (& indians) with very limited experience in the martial arts field so dont be shy to dig. To train a novice to be a skilful martial artist is not easy and takes a lot of time and dedication from both parties. Remember to be the best you have to train with the best. I must admit looking at the martial arts scene around Birmingham there are very few clubs in and around Birmingham where Sikhs have excelled when there is a Sikh instructor. Kash the Flash, Sunny Hira, Hari Singh (Lily Lau) are to name in my opinion succesful ones. There is a very well run new mma gym run by Sikhs in Hockley and I can see that been very successful. The jury in my opinion is still out on Shin Kin. Although they have been around many years they have yet to produce any fighter of class that can live with the best in this country never mind the world ! A new club I believe has opened in a temple in Oldbury. Maybe its too early to judge but from what Ive heard the standard is not particularly good. I know there are so many quality practising Sikh martial artists out there in the Midlands or budding martial artists. It doesnt matter who you train from whether they are white black brown but important thing is quality ! Tread carefully and stay safe.

I see this an old post, but incase anyone else was looking to train thai boxing in birmingham, one of the instructors mentioned above (Damien Trainor, a world champ and one of the best) has recently opened a new full time academy on the Hagley Rd near Quinton / Oldbury, this is great for me as I live that side of Birmingham, but they only teach Thai, no MMA. have a look at www.k-starlegacy.co.uk for a bit more info, I can recommend it.
