AMRITSAR: Blaming the hierarchy of Punjab police for raising the bogey of militancy, two Sikh groups namely the Khalsa Action Committee (KAC) and the Dal Khalsa cautioned the political leadership not to get misled by such stories that have no authenticity.

In a statement KAC chairman Bhai Mohkam Singh and Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh said the stories of “revival of militancy” attributed to some isolated incidents were clearly aimed to create fear psychosis in the minds of political leaders and general masses.

“If at all there was unsuccessful attempt on the life of Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal by anyone, it’s a serious matter and must be probed thoroughly”. However, they wondered why the Punjab DG hasn’t revealed the unsuccessful plot in a transparent manner by holding press conference. They questioned the logic behind leaking the so-called plot to the press in the name of “sources”, they questioned.

To make their positions secure, we believe “old hand” police officers were trying to make politicians feel insecure. It’s an old game and mindset: make political leadership insecure to enjoy impunity.

They said non-Punjabi media has always played the role of a villain as far as the Punjab and the Sikhs were concerned. “A section of media has always been (mis)used by the state officials for floating and planting wrong and cooked-up theories”, they rued.

“It is evident that the environment is being built to pave the way for afresh reign of terror and police repression”, said both. Nobody is denying that the police have first and foremost role and duty to maintain law and order and keep vigil so that peace was not disturbed in the state. But it should not be at the cost of tarnishing the image of Sikhs, they warned.

Leaders of both the groups reiterated that they stand for peace and urged all the concerned to play positive and effective role in maintaining communal harmony in the state.
