Guru Nanak Gurdwara Wolverhampton welcomed the 4th Mercian Regiment to join the Sikh congregation for the Sunday service.

The 4th Mercian Regiment arrived in Wolverhampton on October 2, there were emotional scenes as the 130-strong Normandy Company from the 4th Battalion, The Mercian Regiment arrived at their headquarters in Fallings Park, Wolverhampton

The troops were in Helmand Province for six months during a summer described as “brutal” by army chiefs.

Pat McFadden MP for Wolverhampton South East joined the soldiers on Sunday at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Wolverhampton.

“It was a very moving experience to see the soldiers in the congregation sitting cross legged, paying homage to the Sikh faith

“Later in the Lungar Hall they all sat on the floor and eat Lungar (Blessed food) with the worshippers, this demonstrated the progress we have made in Britain where we can respect each others faiths and cultures” said Pat McFadden MP

Members of the community, family and friends welcomed back the soldiers who are returning home from Afghanistan this weekend, by holding a Blessing and Langar at the local Gurdwara.

Speaking ahead of the event, Pat said: ‘It’s great to see the community coming together to welcome home our soldiers. Our armed forces are the best in the world and our soldiers are showing tremendous bravery and dedication in Afghanistan.’
