Sikh student federation launches Bhindranwale sticker drive in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, Nov. 9 (ANI): Activists of Sikh student federation here on Monday released posters and stickers of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the main architect of militancy in Punjab, calling him a “saint.”

Protestors took to roads on Monday to paste his 100,000 stickers at various places including vehicles and walls.

“Earlier, the stickers of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale pasted on vehicles and walls were objected by some political parties, especially Congress and Shiv Sena. They claimed that he was a militant. So, releasing stickers of him is our way of answering the government,” said Gurdeep Singh Gosha, Member of Sikh Student Federation (Mehta).

Bhindranwale was killed in “Operation Blue star” launched by the Indian army to flush out separatists from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, killing scores and damaging the Akal Takht structure during the operation.

“People say that one should not paste the stickers of Bhindranwale on their vehicles or the walls, but he rests in our hearts. He was accused of being a militant, but he always fought for the upliftment of the Sikh community. His teachings will remain in our hearts forever,” said Jatinder Singh, a local resident.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who ordered the Operation Blue star, was gunned down four months later by two of her Sikh bodyguards over the Operation Blue Star. (ANI)

Ludhiana The Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) today released the stickers of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at Gurudwara Sri Kalgi Dhar Singh Sabha here claiming that the latter was not a terrorist but a ‘saint’.

It may be mentioned that concern has been expressed in certain quarters over the use of the stickers bearing photo of the late controversial figure on their vehicles, including cars, trucks buses, by people. Some political parties have condemned this trend, which has been gaining ground in the state over the last one year.

Paramjit Singh Khalsa, president of the SSF (Mehta), said, “We formally released this sticker as a reply to all those political parties, especially Congress, for condemning the use of this sticker by people. Many a time, these parties have given statements in this regard and crticised it, saying that Bhinderanwale was a terrorist. It is wrong to call this saintly person a terrorist. He was a saint, who started a campaign to uplift the Sikhs and made them understand the teachings of Shri Guru Granth Sahib,” said Amarjit Singh Chawla, former PPSC member, who was also present there.

Interestingly, the members of SSF (Mehta) claimed that the Akali government was supporting them in this campaign of distributing stickers of Bhinderanwale.

Khalsa said, “The Congress did not punish Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, who played a major role in 1984 riots, and the leaders, who killed many Sikhs in Punjab from the year 1992 to 1995 that led to the rise of crime graph. We appreciate the teachings of Bhinderanwale, and we will distribute one lakh stickers in Punjab. After that, we will also distribute these in other states of India also.”
