SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar claims that the changes in the Nanakshahi calendar have been accepted by the Sikhs all over the world and the SGPC is printing 10 lakh calendars for distribution. The amended calendar will be implemented from March 15, first day of ‘chetar’ month.

The Sikh organisations opposed to the changes in the calendar have refused to accept the amendments.

The Sikhs in south California at a convention have asked the SGPC to convene a sarbat khalsa by March 15 to discuss the panthic affairs, failing which the Sikhs will not accept the changes in the Nanakshahi calendar.

Makkar told The Tribune today that no objection had been received from any part of the world against the changes as suggested by the SGPC executive and accepted by the Akal Takht.

Makkar maintained that even in 2003 when the Nanakshahi calendar was introduced, there was opposition from some parts of the world. Sikh diaspora by and large had accepted the changes in the calendar.

Makkar said the SGPC had started the printing of the amended calendar and 10 lakh calendars would be distributed by March 15 all over the world.

He said the changes in the calendar had brought about unity among the Sikh takhts and the Sikhs as a whole. There was no dispute now about the dates of the different gurpurbs of the Sikh Gurus and the sangrands (first day of the month).

Makkar said finally the will of the Akal Takht would prevail upon the Sikhs. Meanwhile, Manjit Singh Calcutta told The Tribune that the California convention had also blamed the SGPC for raising the issue of Prof Darshan Singh out of proportion to sidetrack the issue of changes in the Nanakshahi calendar and the issues facing the Sikhs.

Calcutta, who is heading the Sikh panthic council of the Sikh organisations, said a meeting of the Sikh organisations would be held at Ludhiana tomorrow to discuss the latest situation arising out of the changes in the calendar.

According to Calcutta, Sikhs in the UK were also organising a convention in London on January 23 to discuss the situation.

Protest against changes in Nanakshahi calendar; Panthic bodies in Punjab to hold Convention Punjab Newsline Network Friday, 15 January 2010 AMRITSAR: Several Panthic bodies including Dal Khalsa, SAD (Panch Pardani), Shiromani Panthic Council, Shiromani Khalsa Panchayat, Sikh students Federation, Tat Khalsa, Akal Federation and Sikh Youth of Punjab will be organizing a Panthic Convention to voice their concern against mixing of Nanakshahi calendar with Bikrami calendar.

In a statement Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh, SAD (Panch Pardani) leader Harpal Singh Cheema and Panthic Council chairman Manjit Singh Calcutta said the convention would be held at Ludhiana on January 17 to register their opposition against dilution in the calendar.

We would continue our protest in a democratic way and would not rest in peace till the arbitrary decision of the SGPC to alter the calendar was not revoked, they said.

They opined that the changes had vertically divided the community. They said that those claiming to have achieved panthic unity by agreeing to the changes in the almanac need to reflect on the long-term consequences of their capitulation. They said the SGPC and the Sant Samaj has gone against the wishes and aspirations of the community while bringing the radical changes in the calendar unilaterally.

Condemning all efforts to effect changes in the Nanakshahi Calendar they said these were inspired and encouraged by Hindutva forces and the changes amounted to saffronization of the almanac that gave the Sikhs their unique identity.

As per a thread I posted a while ago ... our unique identity was given to us by Guru Gobind Singh Ji through our Unique guru, unique rehat, unique appearance etc. No calendar can create or uncreate an identity. Which single peole/race/community around the world is identified by its calendar? lol

I think its very unpanthic to say things like this, as the father of our panth gave us our uniqueness.

Shame on what is fast becoming our very very limited and small levels of intelligence. We argue and fight over the most ridiculous things. Were becoming a laughing stock.

Totally agree with the statement below. Pathnic/Sikh Organisations can object as much as they like, however in the end, it will be up to the Gurdwara Committees to decide, what calendar to follow.

Panthic/Sikh Organisations should focus on getting justice for the Murder of Shaeed Darshan Singh and other's injured during the Ludihana Kand and other INJUSTICES being faced by the panth.

    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
    • All of these are suppositions, bro. Linguists know that, generally, all the social classes of a physical area speak the same language, though some classes may use more advanced vocabulary. I'm talking about the syntax. That is, unless the King is an invader, which Porus was not. When you say Punjabi wasn't very evolved, what do you mean? The syntax must have been roughly the same. As for vocabulary, do you really think Punjabis at the time did nothing more than grunt to express their thoughts? That they had no shades of meaning? Such as hot/cold, red/yellow/blue, angry/sweet/loving/sad, etc? Why must we always have an inferiority complex?
    • I still think about that incident now and then, just haven't heard any developments regarding what happened, just like so many other things that have happened in Panjab!
    • There was a young Singh from abroad who went to Anandpur Sahib Hola and got into a fight with some Punjabis who were playing loud non-religious music. He had bana and a weapon or two. There were more of them than him.  He ended up losing his life. Don't be like that. Not worth it to fight manmukhs. @californiasardar1 ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥ Argue not with a fool. p473
