Charitropakhiyan Chritar Forty Eight

Now this chritar was presented at a different site, a propaganda site, SPN and they want someone to explain the 48th chritar. I am not an academic or even learned in Sri Dasam Granth, but with my limited knowledge, I'm going to attempt to explain this this chritar and what kind of morals it is teaching to men and women who read it.

Here is the Chritar. The translations could be off, but I'm overlooking that and just going to the core of it and explain what it is saying.

Chritar Forty eight

Tale of No or Jehan

Dohira

Emperor Jehangir had Noor Jehan as his Begum, the Rani.

Whole world knew she was quite domineering over him.(1)

Chaupaee

Noor Jehan said to him like this, 'Listen, Jehangir, my Raja,

'Me and you go for hunting today and would take all the women

with us.'(2)

Dohira

Acquiescing to her request, Jehangir set out to go for hunting,

And reached the jungle with all the lady-friends.(3)

The ladies in their red clothes were looking so attractive,

That they were penetrating the hearts of both, the humans and the

gods

In new clothes, pristine youth, unique features,

And distinctive ear-wears, they were all looking exquisite.(5)

Some fair and some with dark complexion,

All were complimented by Jehangir.(6) .

Chaupaee

Some women were riding the elephants and all were holding rifles in the hands. They were gossiping, talking, and were bowing their heads to Jehangir.(7)

Some were sitting with their folded hands; they did not let any deer to pass through.

Some were sitting on the backs of the bullocks and some were on the backs of the horses.(8)

Dohira

Some drew out the guns and some swords,

Some were holding the spears and some bows and arrows.(9)

Chaupaee

First the dogs were let loose to chase the deer, then were sent the tiger after them.

Then hunted the wild horses and all that was done because he loved

Noor Jehan very much.(10)

Holding a gun, Noor Jehan, as well, killed deer, antelopes and bears.

Also a number of animals killed by the other begums reached the

heaven.(11)

Dohira

The deer were so affected by the looks of the Begums,

That they, without any hits, sacrificed their lives.(l2)

Those who were struck with sharp swords could be saved,

But the ones, who were pierced by the arrows through female eyes,

could not be.(13)

Chaupaee

A number of ladies rode the horses and injured the deer,

And a few poor fellows lost their souls and fell down just effected by

the arrows out of the female looks.(l4)

The hunting was proceeding thus, when a huge lion emerged.

The Emperor heard the roar, as well, and all the ladies gathered round him.(15)

Dohira

A shield (of protection), with the buffaloes, was created at the front,

And then followed the Emperor and the Begums,(l6)

Chaupaee

Jehangir aimed and shot but could not hit the lion,

The lion was infuriated and jumped towards the Emperor.(17)

Dohira

The she-elephant ran away. Noor Jehan was stunned.

When Jodha Bai noticed, she aimed and shot the gun.(18)

Dohira

When the bullet hit, the lion breathed its last,

She came forward and made obeisance to the Rani three times.(l9)

Chaupaee

The Emperor was delighted that she had saved his life.

He expressed his gratitude to her for rescuing him.(20)

Dohira

When Noor Johan's friend talked to her about this episode,

Jehangir was eavesdropping too.(21)

Chaupaee

'A person who can kill a lion, to that person what is a human being?

'God be benevolent and one must be fearful of such a person.'(22)

Arril

When Jehangir heard this, he flew into rage and shook his head.

'One should not go near such a woman, as one could lose one's life.'(23)

Chaupaee

After hearing this, Jehangir was dreaded, and he became fearful of

women.

'One who kills the lion instantly, how can a man encounter her,' (he

thought).(24)

Dohira

'Plenty of Chritars are there in females; no one can perceive them.

'They do whatever they like; all transpires the way they wish.(25)

'She saved her favourite by killing the lion with one stroke.

'The ladies attain variable characteristic within a few moments.'(26)

Emperor Jehangir became gloomy in his mind,

And, then on, always remained cautious of women.(27)(1)

This needs to be looked through a man's preception. Men are know as the dominant partner in a man and women relationship. Men in the olds days and even now are know as the hunters and women the home cartakers (this is the general perception accepted throughtout all of time, and even today in some places). Men see women as innocent and unable to defend themselves or able to do ill things in the world like stealing or cheating or even killing (look at the court records of the british and Americans records and even later dates like 17,18 century, woman by men were seen as angels that never did anything wrong and were just innocent bystanders and women were rarely held for crimes). To sum it up woman were seen as unable to think highly as men and were lesser than men in everything else (1920, woman in Canada finally got equal rights). To put it in modern terms take Barbie and that's how men thought of them.

The chritar starts off with warning society of the ills of woman who entice men with their beauty and lure men into their trap. It is commonly know today woman are always luring men to themselves with lust (this shows that men are stupid and think very narrow mindedly). Men are easily enticed, so they need to wake up and smell the coffee and the woman that lure men with this art, need to be consious of their actions and their will be punishment for it. Warning going to both here.

The King in the chritar at the beginning is treating the women like they know nothing and are just gossiping machines, who only know how to make themselves look beautiful. The King is seen as the hunter and sit backs and watches the woman. But everything changes when the lion comes to attack the hunters. The King is surrounded by the woman and the animals put in the frontlines to defend off the lion. Some would say why are the women protecting the King when they are seen as the role of innocent and very fragile people. If you look at the context at the beginning the woman are told to be really fond of the King and love him very much. Woman when they love someone become really over protective and this is the role which is seen, when they surround the King to make a shield.

Next the King is seen shooting the lion, but misses and the lion gets even closer. The elephant that was put in the frontlines to protect the Rani was scared of this beast and ran off. The Rani of the King is stunned and unable to do anything, but out of all the army a woman that is seen by men as weak and innocent shots this lion once and kills him without flitching. The King becomes fearful of this, not because all woman are killers, but because his preception that woman are weak and can't defend themselves in tough situatuions, just changed. Also the thoughts that woman are capable of doing this, also results in thinking of woman as more of equals and able to kill just like men and able to do other crimes just like men.

That role that men are the hunters and woman are the homemakers just got debunked. But today society still sees a woman as weak and innocent. Just check the court system of today. A women that commits a crime is less likely to get the same sentence as a man who committed the same crime. Woman are still the homemakers and men view them as that innocent person, who needs protection from a man.

The core lesson, don't underestimate a woman's ability. This in my opinion reinforces that woman are equal in society.

I can give you an example of a bad woman who is always on a propaganda site shooting off her mouth, but then plays the game of innocent creature. I believe that's a clear enough picture for the regular sangat. biggrin.gif

Beautiful work veerji :) Thank you ever so much for the interpretation veerji.. the translations are indeed a bit off, (think they are bindra's work) but your conclusions are quite accurate imho :) if Sri Guruji does kirpa, i can try to provide translations based on Gurmat sources if you want?

Anyway, what's lovely about this post is that a gurmukh soul like 'only five' veerji will straightway get connected to the intended metaphors in Sri Charitropakhyan! It's something a kaami person like jeanwala, ghugger or doorshun lal will never be able to understand.
