The best that the word can be written in English script is Jatthera. However if you write it as Jattera, it does give an impression that the word may be related to Jatts. However, it is an old Punjabi word meaning a respected ancestor – not just of Jatts only. In old days (before Sikhi was adopted), at the death anniversary of the ancestor a Brahman priest would conduct a “Siraadh like” ceremony of offering food to the dead ancestor and after that the host was to give a feast to others. The Brahman priest would conduct the ceremony only in the houses of higher caste people (he would not touch the lower caste) and charge a fee in cash and serving of sumptuous meal. But, if the client could not pay in cash, the priest would accept the “enumeration” for his services in kind (grain, lentils etc). Baba Daduwal ji is talking about this tradition coming back and "smaads "of ancestors being built. But now a days, in many cases, the Brahman priest is replaced by another player - a Bhai/granthi from a gurdwara or a pseudo sant who performs ardas ceremony at the “smaadh” instead.
