If you listen to rap modern or "old school" you can see that never has a famous always conveyed a good message. I have had the experience of having listened to rap too much so I can say this from experience, when you listen to rap it can only take you downhill. Some people including me have used the excuse in saying that they only listen to it because of the beat. Well heres what I've learned from that. I used to say from the beginning when I started listening to it that I would never let it affect me because I knew better. But after a couple of months of listening to it I started to notice that I swear more and generally it didn't have a good affect on me. So why do something knowingly when it CANNOT benefit you. If you look at rappers like 2Pac who in the starting had a good message but what did it do to him. It corrupted him and if you have watch documentries of these guys you can see that they jump willingly into the quicksand that are Kaam and moh. If you still want to listen to that beat then I suggest that you get the Shaheedi Immortality Tracks. They have the beat from some famous songs but still keep a good message going about Sikhi. Crank those CDs all you want and you won't be hurting yourself spiritually.

rap / hip hop is a style of music. that is one thing.

it is another thing about the values of the culture and the icons that represent the culture.

to be most honest, i used to listen to all kinds of rap music. from the worst and most vulgar music by eazy-e and nwa, to more thoughtful and political hip hop like tupac and naughty by nature, to very sentimental, emotional and almost spiritual r&b and soul music by erykah badu and lauryn hill.

as the years went on, and as i started to get more and more into sikhi, almost everything that didn't have gurbani in it started to seem bitter to me.

like seriously i had every single tupac CD ever... i visited lauryn hill's website every day... i even saw her in concert... and i had posters of rappers and i even bought the magazines...

but from the first day i stopped eating meat to the first day i stopped having alcohol to the first day i stopped cutting my hair... all the lyrics of worldly music were just lyrics of worldly music ...

and at the end of the day the only real food for the soul is "har naam hamaara bhojan"

and that comes from guru granth sahib through shabad veechar through guru's kirpa, through khande-ke-pahul.. through abhyaas...

it's not about the music - i mean i'm somebody who will listen to gurbani in all different types of music - western, in traditional raag, in sangat high-paced, and other styles...

but lyrics can have an effect on your mind -- and it's up to you to decide what you want in your mind..

some hip hop and rap have amazing messages but to tell you the truth, from my heart, i can't think of a more amazing

message than gurbani.
