Well, the rule is simple! Akal Thakt ruled: do not sit on chairs to eat langar unless you ARE PHYSICALLY UNABLE to sit on the floor.

I don't know why this is a question. Many people gave a similar excuse "as long as its the same for everyone, etc", but don't forget that some of those people were kicked out of Sikhi for that.

So, the answer is: yes it is wrong to do that... and although I personally don't agree with Akal Thakt's edict, it is what they said, so it is what should be done.
