The planning committee of Slough Borough Council has approved the planning application of the Slough Sikh School ! There were six votes in favour, and one abstention.

Another hurdle has been crossed, but more support is needed from sangat. Please keep the donations coming, follow the example of the Sikh workers at Heathrow who collected £ 1300 or the Muslim owner of the Medina Dairy who gave £ 10,000.

Sikhs urged to help fund school

Backers of plans for England's second Sikh primary school have urged the community to help them raise the cash needed to make the scheme a reality.

The £8m school for Slough, Berkshire, won conditional planning permission on 9 December. Ten per cent of the cost has to be raised from local people.

One third of that £800,000 has already been raised by the Sikh School Trust.

Chairman Nick Kandola is now calling on businesses and other sponsors to help the trust find the rest of the cash.

He told BBC News: "It really is the time to get the community to cough up and get the school established.

"We are also talking to local and national businesses about sponsorship."

The trust hopes building work on the school will begin by April, with the first admissions taken by 2006.
