PETALING JAYA: Barely a week after the first Global Sikhs Aceh Relief team of volunteers and medical professionals left for Indonesia, a second team is being assembled to ship out later this month.

KL Hospital medical officer Dr Tikfu Gee is currently planning the medical supplies list for the second mission comprising 10 medical experts and 15 volunteers.

”We would treat people with gastroenteritis and malnutrition and even conduct minor surgeries.

“We are also getting prepared for possible outbreaks of typhoid, malaria and even cholera.

“That is why we need to take all kinds of drugs, vaccines and even vitamins for our second mission,” Dr Gee said yesterday.

In appealing for donations of cash, medical supplies, food and even transportation, Dr Gee said the mission would take six months to a year.

He said two ships, one to be converted into a mini hospital to treat the patients, were needed so that more coastal residents could be treated.

“We are going to Aceh to help and rehabilitate the tsunami survivors. The story does not end by just giving them food and medical supplies.

“We have to help them resume their normal lives and that is the difficult part,” he said.

The Global Sikhs Aceh Relief is a humanitarian relief mission spearheaded by the Malaysian Sikh Youth.

Its partners, United Sikh of the United States and Waves of Mercy, left for Aceh last Friday.
