Kelowna Sikh Priest Charged With Sexual Assault

KELOWNA, B.C. — RCMP in British Columbia have charged a Sikh priest with sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Const. Steve Holmes with the Kelowna RCMP said Monday that Lakhwinder Singh, 29, faces charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

The girl, who was 15 at the time, and is a practising Sikh, attended Gurdwara Guru Amardas Darbar temple in Kelowna, where Singh was a priest, he said.

Some of the assaults reportedly took place at the temple, where Singh lived until he was charged.

Singh, an Indian citizen who is in Canada on a work visa, also faces charges of physically assaulting his wife during a period of several months.

The temple will employ counsellors to help members deal with the accusations against one of its leaders.

Singh, who appeared in Kelowna provincial court on Thursday, is currently free on $2,000 bail with conditions that he surrender his passport and not contact his victim. Since the crimes were reported on Jan. 6, police have been investigating the possibility there could be more victims, Holmes said.

Singh will appear in court on Jan. 20.
