On the 8th August 1922, during the British Raaj in India, the police arrested five Singhs for cutting Acacia wood for Guru-Ka-Langar (free community kitchen) from uncultivated land attached to Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh, Sri Anandpur Sahib. Under the British Raaj law, everyone was sentenced to a fine of fifty rupees and imprisoned for six months on the charge of stealing wood from the land of the Hindu Mahants, who had taken management and control of the Sikh Gurdwara from the time the Sikhs had fled to the jungles during the barbaric rule of the Mughals. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee started an agitation against the decision of the Government. It was Gurdwara la…

Bhagat Ravidaas jee, poet and Divine mystic, was born on 24th February 1378CE to Bhai Maan Daas jee and Mata Dhurbinia jee. They lived near the city of Varanasi. Bhagat jee was born in a so-called low-caste family of "Chamaars", whose profession was making leather and shoes. Gradually he started spending most of his time in the sangat (company) of saints and Sadhus and built himself a thatched hut wherein he received and entertained wandering holy people. Many stories became current about Bhagat jee's simplicity and holy nature. According to general belief, he was a follower of Bhagat Swami Ramanand jee sahib. In spite of his so-called low caste, Bhagat Ravidaas jee rose…

I'm currently doing a bit of light kantian ethics at college and how kants theories can be applied today on issues like abortion. It got me thinking when do we as Sikhs believe the soul enters the embryo/foetus. Is it at conception like Christians? Sorry if this has been asked before I did do a search but couldn't find anything

'I knelt to pray but not for long, I had too much to do. I had to hurry and get to work for bills would soon be due So I knelt and said a hurried prayer, And jumped up off my knees, My Sikh duty was now done My soul could rest at ease. All day long I had no time to spread a word of cheer No time to speak of waheguru to friends, they'd laugh at me I'd fear No time, no time, too much to do, That was my constant cry, No time to give to souls in need But at last the time, the time to die I went before Waheguru, I stood with downcast eyes For in his hands He held a book. It was the book of life. Waheguru looked into his book and said your name cannot find. I onc…

Parents give blessings to their children. We ask Waheguru to make our children rich and well off. We ask Waheguru to make our children successful in their work and jobs. Which parent doesn’t want this for their children? We ask Waheguru that may our children make a name for themselves in the world. But we should also ask that our children may have love for the Guru. May they love the Guru that much that without the Guru they don’t feel their life is complete. Baba Fareed Jee’s mother, Bibi Merium Jee, said to her son as a young child, “O my son, do simran (remember and meditate on the Lord)”. “Ma, if I do simran then what will I get in return?” The mother replied, “T…

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Bhai Param Singh Ji and Bhai Dharam Singh Ji were two beloved Sikhs of Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. When Maharaj used to travel with his fauj Bhai Param Singh Ji and Bhai Dharam Singh Ji always used to run ahead to prepare for the arrival of Guru Sahib and the Khalsa. They would quickly build a throne and cover it with a canopy and prepare prahsad for the Singhs. When Guru Sahib arrived at the place Bhai Param Singh Ji and Bhai Dharam Singh Ji had set up many of the Singhs commented that even the horses were tired and weary such was the length of the journey.
