Please suggest some books that can be recommended to a non-Sikh, preferably a Westerner (gora) to read about Sikhism. It can be more than one book, and it might as well cover various aspects of Sikhi, such as philosophy, history, Gurbani, Gurmat, etc. whatever other aspects one can think of.

Beautiful documentry - the Sevadar ji appears very polished. Is the sandal wood Chaur Sahib of Hajji Maskin still part of the Toshakhana or was it destroyed in 1984? I have never seen any contempory pictures of it, but have only read about it. As far as I am aware, as it has never been used by anyone before its presentation to the Harmandir Sahib, it should form part of the jalau in the Durbar Sahib itself on such days when jalau is displayed, but its never there. What else was destroyed or looted? The jalau articles that are displayed comprise of only a few puratan treasures and it is difficult to believe that there was not much more, given the bounties our past Sard…

Baba Visaakha Singh jee Dadehar was a Gadri Baba i.e. freedom fighter of Gadr movement. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee too was a Gadri Baba who went to jail for 16 years trying to liberate India from the British. Baba Visaakha Singh jee was caught and tried in the Lahore Conspiracy case at Lahore in 1914-1915. The trial was very unfair. Baba jee used to narrate one incident involving Bhai Jawahar Singh. While the trial was going on, witnesses were required to identify the accused Gadrees. On one occasion, a witness failed to recognize an accused and the prosecutor (lawyer) got upset and scolded him. Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it. -
Yeah, that's one possibility. Another I initially thought is that it's a Muslim trying to gather info. But then, you might ask, how does he know about Sikh textual sources. Well, you'd be surprised at their resourcefulness. A final possibility is he's a weak Sikh who was asked a question by a non-Sikh and now he's suddenly feverishly wondering where it's "written" that you can't marry a young child. To the latter, I would say, you're looking in the wrong spot. Gurbani isn't a 1428 page rulebook, like Leviticus or the Vedas: ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪ ਬੀਚਾਰਦੇ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ The Simritis and Shastras discriminate between charity and sin, but know not the essence of the Real Thing. back then was waaaay different. ppl didn’t attend higher education or have much to do after the age of like… 13, lol. you’d have 13 year olds boys and girls that know how to do kethi, cook entire meals, etc nowadays even 22 year olds are extremely immature and can be sheltered. the average person doesn’t know how to do anything except their 9-5 which they are probably half arsing as well.
